Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dominic Agatep. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dominic, appreciate you joining us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I initially started working in music in 1997, right after high school. I was performing regularly with a band but was not making much income from it so I decided to put a hold on music to pursue a career in sales and start a family. Getting back into music in 2020 and working with many different artist now, I realize that it takes a lot of maturity, focus, and drive to be successful. I don’t think I had that back when I first started so maybe the timing is good now. I can leverage a lot of my experiences in my sales career and building relationships.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Professionally known as “Dom_Brady”, I am a Hip-hop/RnB record producer residing in the San Francisco Bay Area. I began my musical journey back in 1997, when I joined a hip hop band called Urban Icons. In 2006, I took a long hiatus from music to focus on a sales career and to start a family.
In 2019, I faced a challenging time when my eldest daughter underwent brain surgery and cancer treatment. Spending countless hours in the hospital with many sleepless nights, I turned to making music on my laptop to help pass the time. Eventually, I found solace in creating music as a form of escape and a way to cope with my depression.
During the Covid pandemic lockdown in 2020, I reconnected with artists I had worked with in the past. This sparked really sparked my creativity, leading to the release of many records and credits with notable artists like Westcoast Stone, Twista, Bootsy Collins, One Vo1ce, and NBA 2K24 video game.
My distinct sound is a fusion of classic West Coast/G-funk bounce with contrasting modern instruments and vocals. My sonic influences range from Wu-Tang, J Dilla, DJ Battlecat, DJ Quik, Prince, and the Neptunes.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
I think NFTs can be revolutionary if done creatively with meaningful utility built in. A big part of my music success cane be attributed to joining a NFT music collective called Squad of Knights, founded by Grammy award-winning producer !llmind. Owning the NFT gave me direct access to hundreds of creatives worldwide and really accelerated my creative journey.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I believe the biggest key to success in general is the relationships you build and nurture. The biggest challenge is finding the right contacts and making the connection to start those relationships. I wish I knew about all these wonderful creative communities on Discord, Twitch, and other Social Media platforms earlier.
