We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dominic Adonis. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dominic below.
Dominic, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Have you ever experienced a times when your entire field felt like it was taking a U-Turn?
Before I joined the US NAVY, I was doing my own hair and makeup, for everyday glam as well as for my photo shoots. I soon realized (over time, as I practiced and did a lot of repetition and eventually got better) that I actually had a skill, passion, as well as drive in my “hobby”, and started doing “clients” (aka, my friends)
I went into the military thinking I was going to retire as a sailor, but I was still drawn to hair and makeup.. basically cosmetology as a whole.. and was again, still doing hair on the side..
I eventually got out the military, working small jobs (in my opinion), but was still involved doing mine as well as a few people that I’ve met here and there, and it wasn’t until someone mentioned going to Paul Mitchell, then getting my license, that I realized the big picture was right in front of me all along.
Dominic, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
What makes me different from other stylist.. is that I like to this picture myself in my chair when working on a client, and truly put myself in their shoes.. meaning, I like to walk and talk them through the steps, let them know how much I’m cutting as well as physically show them, and thoroughly do a consultation so that we can all be on the same understanding (in terms of color, other chemicals, or cutting)
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
In terms of growing my clientele, I believe actually listening for understanding and repeating back as well as talking thoroughly the steps of the process has lead me to get a lot more word of mouth clients and returning (as well as having a phenomenal shampoo if I do say so myself)
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
Ugh! OF COURSE!!
I love my craft and I love my specialties.
I specialize in curls and everyday color, so I love watching the before and afters when my clients first sit down versus when they leave my chair.
