We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Domina Mara. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Domina below.
Domina, appreciate you joining us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I’m a double Leo [solar + lunar signs]. Take that with what you will, but to Me, I was born an Artist. My mother saw this and pushed for Me to actually have an amazing education with both a BFA and MFA. I’ve used those skills and foundation to create photo sets and short films that define My life as an adult. I’ve had the opportunity to work at billion-dollar companies in the film and entertainment industry. I don’t think I was able to fit in because I’m not “normal.” Normal bores Me. I’m so outside of the scope of societal conformity that I find it confining to be put in a box. Tell any Artist to follow rules and they will find the most creative ways to break them. Having limitations on projects helps work the problem solving mind, but at the end of the day, I am always finding new ways to inspire not just My viewers, but Myself. Isn’t that what life is about? It is for Me.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a professional and lifestyle Dominatrix since August 2013, based in the City of Angels. You can read more about how I began My journey on My website with previous Interviews and a 10-page essay of why and how I came to be the person I am today. Another way to get to know who I am is by following My YouTube Channels @DominaMara and @MaraDomina.
There are very few Female Dominants that have free educational videos. Mine are from My personal perspective and experiences. In addition to educational videos, I also have Kinky DIYs, My BDSM short films [Directed, Produced, and Starring Myself + My Muses] which have been featured Domestically and Internationally, and Travel Vlogs including Dungeon Tours from all over the globe. Since I have built this brand, I’ve unintentionally also become an Influencer for lifestyle products: Skinwear, S*xual Health Toys, BDSM implements, Clothing, Community Apps, Accessories, and so much more.
One more thing that sets Me apart from other private Dom/mes are My events. I have expanded to nurture My local community with Speed Dating / Friending events, Crafting for Queers + Kinky persons / allies, as well as hosting S*xy Bingo every month. I don’t really profit from hosting as the ticket fees are put into the next events. These gatherings are for people who have been marginalized and to give them opportunity to connect with others like themselves.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Business. Unless you are studying business or are actively trying to teach yourself, this is a crucial skill that even private education does not develop very well in young minds before they enter the workforce. I had to learn on the fly thru trial and error. Since I am detail-oriented, I am able to learn fast and quickly make the best decisions for Myself in most industries. Most creatives lack discipline in combination with building structures for their processes. It’s really tough to tie down an Artist Spirit, but when you think about how to transform your work into a business, that is when the importance of number crunching and scheduling really come into play. There is a difference between doing Art as a hobby and creating to profit. There is also a fine line between loving what you do and allowing your work to generate something sellable for the masses. Perspective and intention helps define how much effort I will put into projects because of My passion for it, the impact it will bring to others, and how My energy feels before, during, and after.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Stop using algorithms for social media. I miss having natural growth and viewership from audiences that finds Me organically. I also don’t like that comments and engagement are a popularity contest. I understand the hype and viral culture that social media has created booms with different topics over the past decade, but I’m personally tired of it. Many talented people aren’t being featured and I have no way of being inspired by their work because I have no idea who they are and the same thing can be said on My giving end.
Censorship has been the bane of s*x positive accounts. I’ve suffered the losses of posting My non-explicit art online only to feel the pain of being banned without warning for way less than what celebrities and verified accounts use to promote their brands. The s*xism of males who get to flaunt their bodies versus women who are deemed “too s*xy” to be in certain clothing just boggles My mind and many others’. Classical Art used to be full of nudes. Natural bodies are shamed if they don’t fit a perimeter created by males in the fashion industry from eons ago. Perhaps this is why I only post on social media now for promotional sake, and don’t take the time to browse anymore. If these major changes happened, I would love to return to the digital world with fresh interest.
