We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Domenique Ross. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Domenique below.
Domenique , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
At the age of 8 I was introduced to the world of dance. I never could have imagined 13 years later I would plan to pursue dance professionally as a career. I attended Pittsburgh Creative and Performing Arts for middle and high school. When I auditioned to be a Dance major for college I had to put in perspective that this was something I wanted to continue on in the future. When I was accepted into the Dance program at Howard University I felt that this was the career for me. I have been awarded so many opportunities to dance professionally that made me confident in my abilities to know that I can continue.
Domenique , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am Domenique Ross, a Senior Dance Major, Strategic Legal Communications Minor from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. During my time at Howard I have performed at the International Association of Blacks in Dance Conference, interned at the Washington Ballet, and consistently made the Dean’s List since my freshman year. During the 2020 holiday season I created her own service project “Leave Your Mark” where I raised money to purchase leotards, tights, and dance supplies for students in need. I am a member of Alpha Chapter, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated. I serve on student council as the 2022-2023 Vice President for the College of Fine Arts. I have worked as a professional dancer for the Netflix show, Archive 81. In addition, I have performed in the Open Air PBT in Spring of 2021 as well with many choreographers such as Christopher Huggins, Tommie Waheed, and Kaylin Horgan. Upon graduation, I will pursue a professional career in dance as well as trying to start her own non profit organization to provide students the opportunity to learn about the Arts and STEM.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding experience of being an artist is being able to share my gift with the world. What I love most about dance is the art of performing. When I have the opportunity to perform I can share my work with others. Going through the rehearsal process is special because once the performance arrives, it shows how all the work has paid off. Also, being able to perform has provided me the experience to express myself through my movement. When people can understand me for my art they can understand who I am the core which is an artist.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The ultimate goal is success. Success to me looks like being able to say I lived a life full of creativity. This includes the integrity of my art, being able to travel around the world to perform, and giving back to others. I have been blessed with a village who has supported me unconditionally. Especially my dance choreographers who have poured into me to know that I can accomplish anything I like. I would say my mission as an artist is to use my gifts to showcase to the world and be a resource to others especially the youth.
