We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dom Francis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dom, thanks for joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I think learning how to write songs is about being aware and open to your thoughts and feelings. It also takes a lot of work to get good songs. You’ve got to churn out a lot of desolate ideas and song structures to learn what you like and don’t like. Good taste helps too.
Dom, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Well, my name is Dom Francis and I am a musician and songwriter based in Austin TX. I got into songwriting and playing music because I lost a deal with the devil. (nah im kidding). It just sort of happened one day. I never had a way to express myself until the day I started writing, and it just took off from there. Being a songwriter is a way of life, and I am fully devoted to it.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
To create lasting work that impresses me. My idols come from the old world. Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Gram Parsons. If you listen to their music today it sounds timeless. That is what I strive for in my work. Hopefully I can get close.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me it is the uncertainty. Its thrilling. Never knowing what can come on a given day. And when the ideas are flowing it is a massive high. Its a lifestyle, and an exciting one.
