Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dolo Rose Brewer. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dolo Rose , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
Seny is more than a name, it’s a feeling of belonging. When I emigrated to the US from Guinea at age 15, I met another Guinean girl named Seny, who would become my dearest friend. I remember how, though I was in a foreign land, I suddenly felt a sense of home and comfort. In my native language, “Seny” means brilliance or something glitters like gold.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
The Seny Collection started with a desire to find myself. I was juggling so many responsibilities while raising my three beautiful daughters. While I had a fulfilling home life, I woke up one day and realized I had lost myself in the shuffle. So many women go through that period where they feel like they relinquished their power. I wanted to reclaim my power and spend valuable time with my girls to show them that their dreams and impact can be greater than they imagine.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
In this digital world, one of the biggest lessons I had to learn was that just because your business is online doesn’t mean that you lose the traditional in-person element of connection. I had to learn that you can always do more to connect with your customers, even online. The backstory to that is that when I started doing Facebook lives I would have friends come and help me, but on the other end I wished the customers could actually touch and feel the products in this medium. I tried to compensate by offering great deals and also by supplementing with attendance at vending events in person. These in-person events were a different marketing strategy to allow customers to experience the products in a more complete way. As business owners we have to find more ways to connect with the customer. This is one reason why I would eventually like to own and operate a physical store.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
All of the support I received in the beginning was from my family. One of the biggest things I wish I had done was to look at all the different parts of my business and figure out how much I needed. But the idea of how much I would need scared me, so I then proceeded to start small. The support of my husband to pursue my dream was important, as this is a small family business. My mother also provided what she could. I started by ordering small quantities of sample from Kenya, doing online sales and reinvesting in the business.
