We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Adedolapo Adekanbi a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Adedolapo, appreciate you joining us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
Earning a full time living from my creative work has always been one of my top desires even far back as days i spent doing photography. There’s a desired level of success one must attain to comfortably earn from your creative works and plan for the future also. In as must as i’m not there yet, i believe strongly that i will make it to that point and yet beyond.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is DolapoTheVibe, a recording artist from Queens New york, I was born and raised in Lagos Nigeria and i started my music career by accident. I heard almost all my life i had a nice voice so one day i thought to myself, why not go make a record. And with no prior experience to writing music, i made the move. All i had was the will, my voice and the tiny voice in my head gearing me towards it which i like to refer to as the God factor. Its been 3 years since i followed my intuition and its been a real interesting journey. I’ve learned a whole lot in general and im most proud of myself for independently grinding and keeping the music going. What sets me apart from anyone else asides from being in the military is the ability to stay original and true to myself and always keep it real with people.
In as much as im most proud of being independent and holding myself down like i got a team, ild like to reach out everyone who sees this and buys into my dream and my story to come join me lets build and create more greatness. i need a team who’s as ready to get it as i am, you can reach out to me if you are interested.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Throughout my life journey, a story about resilience that stands out for me is when i joined the army and shipped out to basic training. I knew i had just signed up to join the US army but i sure wasnt ready for the rigourous tasks set for us to complete. I remember specifically one of the graduation requirements was a 60 mile ruck march in full rattle, carrying water jugs, blanks and weapons. It would have been an easy tap out as the task was very hard but the ability for finish through was based off being resilient. My theory is dont start what you cant finish. Its okay to rest just don’t quit.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
When it comes to being a creative its like being pregnant with child. Theres that uneasy feeling you get until you deliver safely. This is how i often feel. I see myself as a light placed on earth to shine. i know My music is a gift to the world and my mission is to share my gift with the world.
