Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Doc. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Doc, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
The core of what we do (writing) is something that I have been doing vehemently since I was a child. Writing the biographical articles I do specifically was just learned with hands on experience. The opposite is true for video and audio editing for our videos. My business partner Mr. Derrick Brown (The Hip Hop Historian) gave me a crash course on that subject in which I am forever grateful for. What I could have done to speed up my learning process is make more time to look into different editing softwares. The main obstacle for everything The Doc’s Board does including our writing and video creation has always been that there is only 24 hours in a day (time itself).

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is “Doc” and I am the owner, founder, and director of the Doc’s Board. I got into the business to create educational yet engaging entertainment centered around black history and nerd culture primarily. I mainly write articles concerning. real black figures and fictional characters. I also make videos about our written content and I interview black professionals of all walks of life. The Hip Hop Historian/Derrick Brown (my business partner) now writes articles concerning the film industry. Where we have found the majority of our success is in our video based content which includes interviews, biographical videos, reviews, and shorts.
From the beginning our execution of our work has always been different than others due to our writing being in the forefront. I am proud above all else that anyone who reads, watches, or listens to what we do can learn even a little bit of knowledge about the world around them and the people who contributes to it. We learn just as much if not more than the people who follow what we do.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy we have had to grow our viewers and readers have always been to just maintain our quality, and consistency. It is true that we have had success at times with making more “mainstream” projects but overall sticking to our niches have helped more in the regard of organic growth.
The second would also be the creation of our shorts. But that is because of how much the algorithm of different platforms pushes that type of content out.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being able to continuously do what I enjoy but it also helping to enrich my life and hopefully the life of others. Keeping my creative integrity while still trying to improve every aspect of the business brings a certain level of accomplishment that anything else short of God can bring me.
