We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dmitrii Kustov. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dmitrii below.
Dmitrii, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
A wild desire for change drove me. After working as an SEO specialist for a while, I realized that I’m not too fond of the approach that almost all internet marketing agencies use. I’d seen the company I worked for at that time offer all clients some ready-made packages. They did not even try to go into the essence of the client’s business; they had a mechanism, which by the way, did not always work. Later I realized that’s how most agencies work. I was disappointed because I understood that this is one of the reasons why people misunderstand and undervalue SEO and internet marketing in general. So I quit and decided that I would try to do better.
From the first days, I emphasized an individual approach. Every client who came to me did not receive any ready-made solution packages. Instead, we sat down with a business owner or a marketing director and sorted out what goals they had as a business, what it would take to achieve those goals, what they had already tried, what was worth trying, and so on.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am an entrepreneur and founder of Regex SEO; we develop successful custom marketing campaigns for companies large and small, including Tulsa Federal Credit Union, United Salt Corporation, Dignity Memorial, and more. I’m a data-driven Marketing Director who helps companies get the most out of their marketing budget to increase market share and revenue. Outside of Regex SEO, you can find me teaching SEO, business, and marketing strategy classes or training LeMitri’s kennel dogs.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
It’s funny, but I’d like to get rid of the idea that was somewhat cultivated by the culture I grew up in. That idea: you only need a job to pay the bills, it’s just about making money. This attitude toward work leads to a mindset that you don’t care at all about what you’re doing. You don’t try to do better, and you just work the necessary hours and that’s it. Although, I look at it all differently now, it would have been cool to realize that a lot sooner than I did.
Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
I have a story with a client that I still work with. One day they contacted me and said they wanted to work with me. I turned them down because I didn’t have enough time and resources. A month later, they contacted me again, and I turned them down again. They contacted me for probably half a year, and I kept saying “no.” Each time, they wanted to work with me more and more. And in the end, when I was able to find the resources for them, we signed a contract with them for ten times the amount we agreed on initially.
