We caught up with the brilliant and insightful D’Marrea Steed a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
D’Marrea , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Writing has always been natural to me. Reading literature, breaking down elements and building them back up to make sense of what I was reading and reflecting through perspectives allowed me to wander deep into organizing my own thoughts and making sense of my own world — creating relatable pieces of art, short stories, and rhythm and poetry. The love of the art form and the process of it brings hope, peace, and refuge and when dots are connected it’s like solving equations.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Originally born in Oceanside, San Diego and currently a native of Houston, TX. Although writing has always been a part of my life, I began recording music more professionally and releasing after 2015. This happened organically when moving to Houston to study at UH, then meeting local producers and engineers who had instrumentation but needed writing to complete the compositions. After earning the chance to collaborate by proving the power and prowess of the pen —I would later learn more about the business, and became more understanding of publishing and copyrights to further protect my art while discovering ways to promote and develop passive revenue streams.
Sales, leadership and web development roles in Houston kept doors opening as clients would ask me to assist them in the start ups of their businesses. This led to gaining more experience as a consultant, offering web development, project management and PR to multiple clients which would allow me to build teams to offer these services to more individuals and businesses who needed it throughout the community. My clients would range from mom and pop shops, to oil and gas and political sectors, pro and veteran athletes, lifestyle professionals and CEOs of multiple start ups.
Being of service to those around me has been most fulfilling while continuing to hone my sound as an artist. I am proud to balance work and the arts while staying true to my faith and without compromising self.
Starting a business and not sure how to go about your first 30, 60, 90 or 180 days? Are you currently running a business and need new marketing strategies, or perhaps a rebrand? Are you going through restructuring and need gaps filled virtually or in office? We also offer mentorship, personal assistance, IT admin, and project management. Some of our creative services include: social media management, executive producing, audio engineering, and songwriting.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
The more I look into this I realize we do not have union. We have to organize further as a collective to create what this can look and feel like for artists and creatives. It really takes a village and community has to have an aligned vision. There is a revolution happening and the systems of societies following status quo are not built for the people, especially those who make the comfortable uncomfortable.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
It is a special feel when someone learns the words to something you’ve written. It’s even more touching when I receive a message or sentiment that my music was heard and it helped someone get through their day or find light in a dark situation. We also offer mentorship, personal assistance, IT admin, and project management. Some of our creative services include: social media management, executive producing, audio engineering, and songwriting.
