We recently connected with DL Scott and have shared our conversation below.
DL, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
If I had to choose, I would have to say my happiness would lie in being a creative. Creativity has a much broader spectrum where I’m not bound to a particular lane. Although there is potential for happiness as an artist, there is a feeling of completeness in creativity. I struggled along my journey of discovery in finding my voice and my brand. I possessed so many talents but I couldn’t decide the best lane to take. I could solely write, but I would miss the stage. I can solely produce, but I would silence my unique vocal stylings. So many thoughts. It finally dawned on me during meditation to own my craft and solely create! As my visions come to light, I now understand that it takes every creative bone in my body to breathe life into it.
DL, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Although i come come from a musical background, my true introduction to music in my teen years. I remember vividly, while preparing for the 7th grade talent show. My teacher asked “ What is your talent?” I responded saying “I don’t know!! Aren’t you supposed to help me figure it out LOL”
She asked one question of me that made it all make sense.
“Scott what is it that you do when you’re all alone?”
That’s when it clicked… I love to listen to Music, Sing it, and create melodies
Instantaneously, my life’s purpose was formed. Over time, I’ve built a great wealth of knowledge artistically for song structure, sound sampling, and self expression. I’ve nurtured the unique ability to cultivate talent in others and help them to commercialize their sound for mainstream marketability
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think the biggest detriment to artists is the dehumanization we face from society. Artists are more relatable than people would think and we can connect on a deeper level if everyone opened up more. Vulnerability goes both ways and we can make better music and music relationships if we remember that no one is perfect but we are all perfectly imperfect
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of being a creative is seeing others reach their goals. I learned very early in life that I’m blessed in order to be a blessing to others. It’s my duty to be obedient to the responsibilities of my gifts and talents. To see the full cycle come full circle is inexplainable. There is a joy I get every time I’m able to influence others with my artistry and in a way the influence comes right back my way. Dopeness in true form!
