We recently connected with Dkay and have shared our conversation below.
Dkay, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
A believer that there is no reward without risk. The recent risk that I have taken is entering into the financial industry and merging my finance career with my music career. I am now using my music to build a community around improving your life through financial literacy.

Dkay, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am an rapper/producer/audio engineer from Calgary, Canada. I started my music career in middle school, making music on my computer and releasing it. In 2011, I moved to Vancouver and set a goal of being discovered by someone in the music industry. In 2015 I accomplished that goal and was taking meetings with labels like Cash Money Records, Universal Records, Calabasas Records, to name a few. The main thing that I learned in this time period was that I was not interested in signing a deal at that time. I realized that I wanted to enter a label situation with more leverage or not need a label at all; which meant raising my own funds to launch the new leg of my career.
From this moment in 2019, I decided to dive into the world of finance and became a financial educator. I figured that if I could learn how to help other people with their money, then I would accumulate enough knowledge and resources to navigate as an independent artist, funding my own career. I also figured out a way to leverage my career as an artist to spread this knowledge of finance.
From here, I launched my company called The New 1%, which provides my community with resources for elevating to the next level. I focus on areas of personal finance, business development, and personal growth.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I studied, and continue to study the 12 universal laws. I also watch a lot of content that re-frames this information in different ways so that my understanding of these laws develops over time.
Aside from this, I have read many of the common success books like: Think & Grow Rich, The Power of Now, The Laws of Human Nature, 48 Laws of Power, etc.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Society must understand that supporting an artist is important because it influences our future, and the future of the next generation. Art & culture has a bigger impact on us the education, so we need to support the artists that are creating a better world. This can be in the form of finding investors to get behind an artist, or start independent platforms for music consumption that rival the major streaming platforms.
