We recently connected with Dk Stargod and have shared our conversation below.
DK, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
People always are shocked when I tell this story. When I started making music about three short years ago, I had NO experience whatsoever in the field. My venture into the world of music absolutely shocked my friends and family. That being said, I had to learn how to write, record, produce, and perform my music. During my first year, I learned how to record myself and found my signature, energetic sound. YouTube tutorials were my best friend during this time, and I would spend hours watching videos on vocal projection, and audio engineering. In my second year, I focused more on the engineering aspect of my career, beginning to mix and master songs for my peers in the St.Louis music scene. I also acquired an internship at the wonderful Phat Buddah studios. Now entering my third year, my focus has been more tailored to the distribution and promotion of my music, learning content creation, photography, and videography. Youtube is definently the best resource for upcoming artists, as the information is unlimited, as well as free. The most essential skills I learned was my unique projection, which separates my music from others, and my ability to run a studio from my home. Studio time is expensive, and the ability to record myself has saved me tons of money on studio time and provided the funding for my career. In terms of obstacles of learning more there really hasn’t been many. Im pretty much a jack of all trades, and I believe there is always something you can learn in the music world. That being said, I also don’t want to spread myself in too many areas and get overwhelmed.
DK, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am DK Stargod AKA The Dark Knight Of The Lou. I am an artist, sound engineer, and videographer from St. Louis, Missouri. I have always had a passion for music ever since I was a little kid, since I was surrounded by a family of musicians. I started making music about three years ago during the COVID-19 pandemic. After finding my sound, I released my debut album “Planet X” in the summer of 2023. Planet X was filled with my signature high energy vocals and unique delivery. My favorite tracks from the album are “Moshpit!”, “Decatur”, and “RED LIGHT”
This November, I will be releasing my second album, “Stargod Loves U Too” which features me experimenting with multiple different sounds and genres such as rage, dance, rap, R&B, and pop music. The topic of the album is the duality of falling in love, both the good and the bad side of it, as well as my general growth, both as a person and an artist.
My music as well as my unique sense of style are heavily influenced by the artists I grew up listening to, like Michael Jackson, Young Thug, and Playboi Carti. You will always catch me wearing outfits consisting of black gothic clothing, and unique sunglasses. I am the Dark Knight after all.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Most non-creatives don’t understand how much hard work goes into making music, especially if you want to make it your full time career. Me personally, there isn’t a second of the day where i’m not either working on my music, or thinking about my next steps to further my career. This is really my passion, and it’s essentially consumed my life. There are times when my friends will want to hang out, and I won’t be able to because something music related came up. Sometimes I’ll even have to cancel plans, which I hate doing but it is sometimes necessary in order for me to get where I want to be. The music industry is the most competitive it’s ever been right now, and the amount of work that gets put in to try and separate yourself from the crowd with little to no reward at times can be very discouraging. If you have any friends who are artists, support them as much as you can! It’s free, and it helps more than you could ever imagine.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the feeling I get when people genuinely enjoy my music. Whether it be through compliments on a song that took me a while to make, or seeing a crowd jump up and down with excitement as I perform my most popular songs. Seeing people enjoy my art and support what I do is definitely one of the best feelings in the world. It’s almost indescribable.
