Today we’d like to introduce you to Djivan Schapira.

Hi Djivan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My story as an artist and craftsman started when I was a young boy. As the son of a master craftsman I learned the trade early and as I grew up realized I was meant to follow this path. Born in Paris France, I immigrated to the US when I was 6 and ended up studying architecture as Parsons School of Design. Since then I have landed representation by a world renown collectible design gallery called Todd Merrill Studio.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Growing up the son of an artist and becoming an artist myself, the journey has certainly not be a smooth ride. However I believe it’s through the trials and tribulations that we discover our best selves which given the opportunity, can allow for something great to happen. As most artists know, the lifestyle can be quite a rollercoaster… From the years of R&D to figure our your identity, to the difficult task of getting noticed, the life of an artist is both the most fulfilling and rewarding while being a true test of ones perseverance.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I like to think that I’m a collectible design artist. This means producing works of art that also serve function and blending that line as much as possible. My preferred mediums up until this point have been wood and resin however I’m constantly thinking of new ways to add to my craft. If you were to look at my portfolio you could say that I specialize in tables however I’ve also created, large wall cabinets, consoles, mirrors, wall art and more. It’s hard to say what I’m the most proud of at this point however I do feel pretty good about having work in several Louis Vuitton Flagships across the world. They represent a variety of incredibly skilled artist across all mediums so its truly an honor to deal with such a notable group.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Covid 19 was quiet a pivoting point for me… I had originally thought I would try to make smaller more affordable items in the hopes of selling pieces in large volume but the time off from Covid allowed me to think bigger in terms of quality and scale. It’s at that point that I produced my first high end collection of collectible design titled “Les Fleurs” which allowed me to have my own solo show at High Line Nine Galleries once Covid has subsided. If it weren’t for the world coming to a halt, I don’t know if I would have had that realization and ended up where I am today.
