We were lucky to catch up with DJ Woods recently and have shared our conversation below.
DJ Woods , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I’ve always dabbled with music my whole life but my journey learning the DJ craft didn’t really start until I was about 23. At this point I thought (incorrectly) that I was too old or late in the game. I felt that I needed to work extra hard to be up to par with my peers. Over the years I’ve come to realize that DJing, as well as everything in life, is an on going building process no matter what level you’re at. With that said I’ll be learning the craft forever!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Being around friends who are aspiring recording artists, it was almost inevitable that I got into music in some way or another. Initially I was interested in music production and a good friend suggested that I start with learning to DJ. I followed that advice and quickly realized I had a knack for DJing. I never looked back after that. Now days I make a living offering DJ services for all types of occasions. From nightclubs and bars to weddings and birthdays, I’ve developed my craft to accommodate a multitude of events.
I’ve worked, and continue to work on being as versatile as possible. I believe that being versatile makes my brand unique, and gives my clients the best value.
I’m proud to say if you book me for an event I will do everything in my power to provide the best quality possible!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I think the COVID pandemic really was a big obstacle for me and really everyone around the world. I was already suffering a bit of ‘burnout’ going into the pandemic and DJing virtually became nonexistent for me for those couple years. Towards the end of the pandemic I was offered to go on tour. I hadn’t been staying sharp with my skills and on top of that the pay was low so I was worried about how bills would get paid while I was away. I regretfully declined. This was a very low point in my career and I felt like I had lost everything I had been working to build. It was hard to move forward but quitting was honestly never an option. I knew if I had done it once I could do it again, and again and again if need be. I stayed true to that mindset and now 2 years later my business is doing even better than before the pandemic!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
As a DJ, I cater to my audience and get to see in real time how the respond to what I’m playing for them. It’s super rewarding for me to see a crowd enjoying themselves and to know I’m playing a major role in that experience.
