We recently connected with Dj Tlynn and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, DJ TLynn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
My most meaningful project I’ve been working on is my “True Mashup: African – American -Caribbean Party”. The story of how True Mashup has come about isn’t overly complicated. It is honestly an event that embodies myself whilst also building, influencing, and supporting the community around me. Personally, I find myself immersed in many cultures, primarily pertaining to but not limited to Caribbean, African, and African American cultures. That being said, I notice that while I am blessed enough to be involved in these different cultures, majority of other people have not been exposed to many cultures outside of their own. Seeing that, I pushed to create a platform that allowed me to expose people to new cultures, thus, mixing communities to create a new community within itself. With the platform of True Mashup I hope be able to shine a light on others in this community, for examples, artists, chefs, or any other creatives, businesses, ect that I can integrate into the True Mashup experience. All together, True Mashup is an embodiment of myself, along with my desire of building community. The reason it’s meaningful to me is because it extends much further than just myself, and provides something to the public that seems to currently be missing.

DJ TLynn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My journey as a DJ is deeply rooted in my upbringing and passions. From a young age, I’ve always been drawn to music, spending my free time creating beats and melodies in my bedroom. This love for music, combined with the frequent moves of my childhood, sparked my fascination with different places and cultures. As I grew older and began traveling to new states and countries, I fell in love with the diverse sounds and rhythms I encountered. I didn’t just listen to music; I analyzed it, noticing connections between unfamiliar genres and the sounds I already knew. One thing that stood out to me was how, outside the U.S., so many genres of music inspire people to dance and fully enjoy the moment.
I decided to pursue DJing when I realized I had something unique to offer. In my environment, I often noticed people being overly reserved, sticking to familiar music, venues, and DJs. It didn’t feel like they were truly letting loose and having fun. My goal as a DJ is to change that—to introduce people to new cultures and sounds while creating a safe space where they can let go of their worries, issues, and egos. Through my sets, I aim to normalize dancing, joy, and genuine fun, helping people reconnect with the pure enjoyment of music. Currently, I am accepting bookings for private events, corporate events, weddings, nightclubs, lounges, festivals, and am willing to travel.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I think one of the biggest challenges for non-creatives—and even some creatives—to understand is that there’s no single “right” way to do something. In creative fields like DJing, there may be certain standards or expectations, but just as no two people are the same, no two DJs are the same either. Even if there’s a standard for how DJs perform or operate in a specific area or region, it doesn’t mean everyone should follow it exactly. My advice to other creatives is to embrace your authenticity. Don’t feel pressured to conform to the norms of your environment—stay true to what makes you unique and special. Those who are not creative’s but are to hire, manage, interact ect with any creatives, the best advice i can give is to not make any assumptions and to clearly communicate any and all expectations so all parties are on the same page.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The driving force behind my creative journey is to challenge how many people navigate society today. I feel like people have become overly reserved and hesitant to truly express themselves. It’s reached a point where being unexpressive has become the norm, and those who embrace their individuality, have fun, or act a little silly are met with strange looks—or worse, recorded instead of joined. My goal is to create spaces where self-expression is not only encouraged but normalized—so much so that it inspires the same openness in environments far beyond my own.
