We recently connected with Dj Soles and have shared our conversation below.
Dj , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Any thoughts about whether to ask friends and family to support your business. What’s okay in your view?
The Biggest Misconception People think that your friends and family are suppose to support you and in reality they’re not obligated to. Any business and/or organization that you own, you care for like your baby and naturally you want you friends and family to have that exact same energy. When they don’t of course you’re upset. However, understand that once your business or company gets to a position of power, the same people who didn’t feel the moral obligation to support you then will now. I promise they will!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hello I go by the name Dj soles , owner of Beunderrated Promotional Group. I started within the nightlife about 7yrs ago. I started off into promotions fresh out of highschool and After awhile of promoting parties I thought to myself this is fun , but I think it’ll be better to actually BE the party. So I took a step (aka jumping off the porch), purchased my first Dj set up, and it was up from there.
There were a lot of ups and downs to get where I am today, BUT mostly Ups!
After about 6yrs building my name and dj resume within the nightlife community, Covid hit. I thought abouts ways to keep my name alive as well as ways to still be able to help businesses and nightclub come back after the pandemic. I curated a promotional Organization called “ Be Underrated”
We provide quality events around the metroplex, from “I want to relax” all the way up to “I want to party.” We also host comedy events which has been very successful thus far.
It took alot and is still taking alot to build this brand but I wouldn’t do it any other way because being in the dj booth first has allowed me to be able to offer what others can’t , and that’s providing what the people are looking for EXACTLY !
We, as in The Beunderrated Organization and myself, wants everyone to know that somewhere within your life you felt inadequate and underlooked maybe even overlooked BUT .. it’s okay to BeUnderrated!!
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Going to night clubs and bars assisted with building my reputation as a DJ, however, meeting club owners and promoters helped solidify my name within the nightlife as a whole. I’m not where I want to be, BUT gettin out and socializing with new faces has resulted in curating great partnerships.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I curated my promotional team I started in a way that was a little unorthodox. I started with friends and people I met throughout my career. I had to take a change in direction after a year or so because I came to an understanding that ultimately only I hold the heart and core values necessary to fulfill the vision I have for my business and that’s okay. At the end of the day it’s a development process. As a business owner you have to leave room for errors and mistakes AND learn from them. Use them for growth and assure that those mistakes don’t arise again in the future.
