We were lucky to catch up with DJ Shido recently and have shared our conversation below.
DJ Shido, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
DJing is a craft I personally feel as though that can be learned by most people, but only the people that really dedicate the time to learning this craft can succeed in. I started learning about DJing in 2015 and 7 years later I still find myself learning something new just about every gig I do.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My names DJ Shido. I’m a DJ from Baltimore, MD. I’ve been DJing for about 7 years and got into it really by helping my friend and business partner Butch Dawson run his backing tracks for a few shows while his DJ at the time was on a tour with another artist. After becoming his official DJ I also began to DJ for my friend DZ and our brand Basement Rap.
For the first few years in my career I was doing majority DIY rap shows and house parties. I ended up eventually doing a few small tours with Butch and ended up doing a US tour with him and Jpegmafia.
Since the tour, I’ve done a lot of openings for bigger artists like Lil Skies, Ricky Hil, and K Camp. I’ve also branched out into doing weddings and more corporate professional events.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I’ve built my audience on social media by being as visually appealing as possible. Another key to building an audience on social media is consistency. If you want to be seen, you have to consistently put out content, giving people more of a chance to find you and your current followers more content to enjoy.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Before I was a DJ, I actually was a photographer and did a lot of video work. I was a photo major at my local community college. I dropped out maybe my 3rd or 4th semester, and was working at a local Panera bread. Some time later, I ended up breaking my cameras, and instead of buying new ones, ended up learning how to dj
