We were lucky to catch up with DJ Rozay recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, DJ thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you share an important lesson you learned in a prior job that’s helped you in your career afterwards?
As cheesy as it sounds, it’s important to be yourself–everyone else is taken. There’s nothing wrong with drawing inspiration from other creatives/colleagues, but at the end of the day, no one can do you, like YOU. Some will dislike your craft and A LOT of people will love what you do. When I get booked for gigs/events outside of my league, I tend to question why they book someone like myself–especially since the the type of music that is typically played at these events are different from my style. But then I tell myself, clearly they like what I do and they booked me for what I do. So I say this to say try to stay consistent, learn as you go, seek inspiration and ultimately kick butt at being YOU.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hailing from the DMV and deeply rooted in my Ghanaian heritage, I, DJ Rozay posses an inherent affinity for beats and rhythms. Music has always coursed through my veins, and it was my exposure to diverse genres like highlife and hiplife that kindled my passion for DJing. After school, my cousins and I would come home and play music. During this time, I was also exposed to my mentor/big sister DJ Akuaa–she was the first female DJ that I noticed. I remember jokingly informing my family that I wanted to DJ. Who knew a silly joke would eventually develop into something deeper. DJ Akuaa and Tagsoundz (a dj group) took me under their wings and guided me throughout this journey. Despite my shy demeanor, I am a young, vibrant woman with a clear mission—to use music and creativity to touch the hearts of people worldwide.
When it comes to my mixing skills, I emanate a contagious vibe. I have graced numerous events and festivals, leaving audiences captivated by my talent. Collaborating with notable acts such as King Promise, TxC, Major League DJz, and Kelvyn Boy, Skyla Tyler and among others, I strive to make my mark in the industry and expand my reach to various corners of the world.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Speaking about us in rooms of opportunities. Sharing our content. Sending encouraging words. Although pushing money into the artist’s craft is great, these three things that I mentioned earlier is free and means a lot! It shows that you actually care for my growth/progression.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist/creative/dj, is being able to see people truly have a good time via music. I remember I had to DJ to a crowd of like 10 people. It was tough because it is hard djing to a smaller crowd–they notice everything!! However, the fact that they were still on their feet dancing, made me realize that sometimes it’s beyond DJing; it’s about that person who spent their hard earned money to release some steam and have a good time. So if I am able to do that, I believe I have accomplished my mission for the day.
