We caught up with the brilliant and insightful DJ Newmark a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, DJ thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
As a DJ, learning the craft is more than simply knowing how to use your equipment to play music. Your “craft” is about learning different type of music, knowing the various parts of all of your songs, reading the crowd and understanding the business aspect of being a DJ.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
DJ Newmark is known within the entertainment industry as “The Legendary Throwback King of Hip-Hop and R&B” music. Born as Edward Alexander Jr on June 17 1971 in Okinawa, Japan he adapted his DJ name as a tribute to the first set of DJ turntables he owned (brand name Numark). Son to a military family, Newmark traveled the world DJ’ing across the globe as he was being exposed to the different local musical influences as he grew up. DJ Newmark’s major break into the industry by way of a member of Russell Simmons entourage discovering him while performing at a military club in Fort Dix, NJ and the rest is history.
DJ Newmark’s diversity in music genres has kept his dance floors packed for over three decades although Old School Hip-Hop and R&B is his specialty. Newmark’s live DJ performance resume spans over six countries, 31 states and 68 cities. Working with a variety of professional athletes (former Official DJ of the Oakland Raiders), comedians and musical recording artists. He has over 150 songs to his producer credit and has been a contributing member of the Association of Songwriters, Composers and Publishers (ASCAP) since 2001.
Currently the daily radio show host of “The DJ Newmark Experience”. Averaging over 27K listeners per hour to a worldwide audience, DJ Newmark can be heard on West Palm Beach Florida’s number one radio station for classic Hip-Hop and R&B, YO! 107.1 FM at 3pm EST and the “Flavor on Top of Flavor Master Mix” show Mon-Fri at 5:30pm and on weekends at 6pm EST. His social media influence is constantly expanding with over 120K followers across all platforms.
DJ Newmark recently released his debut album “Hot Tracks” in January 2023 and is now available on all music streaming services. DJ Newmark has built a brand for himself that represents passion for the Old School Hip Hop and R&B culture, keeping that music alive and well for all to enjoy.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My main motivation as an Old School music DJ is to keep the music of the 80’s,90’s and 00 relevant. Music is a time capsule that can instantly bring back memories of a specific time in the lives for most listeners. I want to also remind the associated Artist that their contributions to the culture have not been forgotten and that they are still supported and loved by dedicated fans. I also want to expose and educate the younger generation of music listeners to the foundation of the sounds that shaped today’s musical landscape within the Hip-Hop and R&B genre.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I wish my generation of DJ’s had the convenience of technology regarding to the internet and Social Media. Music can be captured and shared in an instant with digital files comparted to having crates of vinyl records and books of CD’s. DJ Controllers and laptops has also eliminated the need for bulky equipment set ups that also require longer set up and break down times.
