DJ , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
My very first client came in 2011. I was asked to Dj a 90’s theme wedding in Birmingham, AL. I was super nervous being I didn’t have much 90’s music. Thank God i have and older brother who is very familiar with 90’s music. He tagged alone with me after making me a playlist and we rocked that wedding! My very 1st wedding/gig fresh out of college paid me 500$. I always told myself to start low and build your price up based on experience and the equipment offered.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Dj New Era. I got into this business as a bootlegger. I was known as the CD guy around campus. I transformed my hustle into a Disc Jockey around 2008. I offered services such as wedding DJ, College Dj, Club Dj, Private Party Dj and mixtape DJ. What sets me apart from the rest is my hustle. My day starts at 4am and doesn’t end until 7pm on weekends. My weekends are a little different LOL. I am most proud of how far I’ve came. I want my potential clients to know I put God 1st in anything I do and I believe in contracts and doing good business!
Have you ever had to pivot?
I use to work for 95.7 Jamz in Birmingham,AL for 2 years, thats the biggest station in the city. I quit that station being it wasn’t any room to grow. I went to a station that was online based and wasn’t well known. Being at this station was uncomfortable but it gave me the tools needed to grow in the radio world. The station only last 6 months and I was without a radio position for 3 months, but being patient and keeping good relationships open led me to having a full time position with IHeartmedia.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I funded my business through mixtapes!. I have over 400 mixtapes online to download. Working with artist from all over the world lead to me meeting some pretty solid people. Shout out to Livemixtapes.com, they gave me an opportunities to spread my brand all over there site.
