Today we’d like to introduce you to Dj Mixx.
To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about your story?
I am a deejay/event producer representing ReggaeBoyz Sound, trained and sharpened by King Waggy Tee. I am an entertainment attorney with much of my practice focused on music and a spiritualist specializing in divination within the Ifa Orisa tradition. I grew up in North Miami Beach, left to NYC to further education and continue my musical journey, and later returned home to add a law degree to the equation.
On any given day, I could be deejaying a concert with Jesse Royal, Yohan Marley and Yung Wylin (Livity Haven), playing music with Hymn Marley at Soho Beach House, negotiating contracts for reggae veteran, Everton Blender, or in New Orleans with my brother, Sen Elias, at Crescent City Conjure giving spiritual readings to seekers.
I have built my brand on a diverse background and skillsets which coalesce around creativity, social activism and personal integrity.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Everything comes with challenge. For me it has been no different. For those who take leadership roles, it can be challenging to hold onto a clear vision (which you, alone, might believe in, at first) in spite of a process that seems to be resistant/slow-moving. To find fire, coach yourself through persistence, and push towards manifestation is often the challenge when you step outside of convention. It may also seem challenging not to react to frustration with impulse and emotion, and respond, instead, with steadfastness and maturity. Sometimes we feel like we are trying everything and nothing is working… this is normal. It’s the price we pay to initiate new beginnings. So see it as your offering and bare challenge gracefully. Recognize the call to dig deeper, seek perspective and come again with better strategy. Recognize your call to courage and answer every time.
What should we know about what you do?
That all I do well, is a result of Spirit’s grace, a solid family, wise elders and good friends. Say your ancestors’ names in the morning, and your peoples’ names every chance you get. Breathe life into your community. If you don’t see a space to do so, make a space to do so. We are nothing without community.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Happiness is good health, sound mind, spiritual groundedness, physical movement, clean eating, stretching, conscious breathing, strong relationships with loved ones, inspiration, artistic output, and sunshine… Happiness is trying our best, learning from results whether positive or otherwise, and remaining productive. Happiness is peace. accepting natural cycles/impermanence gracefully, enjoying (or learning how to enjoy) the present whether celebration or tribulation, and maintaining a genuine smile. Happiness is leading by example. Seeking within and loving who you find. Happiness is staying in your magic and realizing that it’s infinite.
