We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dj Mixtress. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dj below.
Dj, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Somethings that are required for success is knowledge. Always be open and willing to learn from all others. No matter if the person has just joined or industry or has been a seasoned vet for decades, a person that values themselves through education gains value from that Knowledge moving forward.
Dj, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi I’m Dj! I’m a Sound Engineer located in Houston Texas. Through my brand Brave Sound, we provide recording, mixing and mastering services. I started off as a saxophonist in secondary school, played through marching band in high school and college. In college I became interested into Audio Engineering. I became so invested that I received honors and the engineer of the year award. After receiving my Music Recording and Technology degree, I developed my brand Brave Sound. Brave Sound encourages artist, poets, and musicians to speak their truth through the service of recording, mixing, and mastering.
One way that Brave Sound is set apart from others within our industry is our willingness to be inclusive to women. Women make up only 5% of our overall industry and often times are excluded from major opportunities within the Music Industry. That is why we focus on providing more opportunities to women to join and excel in their careers. We also value providing more education opportunities for all that are within the industry.
What I’m most proud of is the professionalism that we established within our brand. We believe it truly is a brave attribute to express yourself through music and the creative arts and your art should be treated with precision and care. Brave Sound is a space where all creatives can speak their truth and hit the booth today!
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
While I was in college I began attending open mics, concerts and networking events for creatives. (Basically word of mouth marketing) Through various social media outlets I would post sponsored post of my business but I wanted to connect with my clientele in a different way. I would attend a open mic, listen to the artist and gain a feel of their expression and then after their performance ask them about their inspiration behind their art. It took time to developer business relationships but building that foundation has by far been the most beneficial.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
While I’m school I participated in many internships. Cleaning dishes, taking out trash, grabbing lunch orders, cleaning the studio and all. It’s very rewarding to look back and to appreciate all the hard work and learning that got you into the position that you are in now. Going through that humbling experience taught me to be disciplined to the craft and that what ever position that I am placed in to do the very best that I can in it. I wouldn’t be where I am today within this interview if it weren’t for those moments of resilience.
