We recently connected with Dj Kickz and have shared our conversation below.
Dj, appreciate you joining us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
Right now, yes! I’m able to make a full-time living from my creative work as a DJ but it definitely wasn’t like that from day one. I started out DJing at small events and teen parties, really just trying to get my foot in the door and build experience. The real turning point came when I stopped comparing myself to others and started focusing on my own path that shift in mindset helped me grow more than anything else honestly. Once I locked in, opportunities started to come my way. I began getting calls from promoters in strip clubs, meeting more artists in the industry, and booking private events. Some key milestones for me were getting my first paid gig, directing my first music video, opening for well-known artists, and interning at a popular radio station. Honestly each of those experiences taught me something different about the business and the craft. Looking back, I think I could’ve moved faster by staying more focused and not taking things so personally but honestly, I believe everything happens in God’s timing. Every stage was necessary for the process, and it made me who I am as a creative today.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a DJ, songwriter and creative director. I use sound and visuals to connect with people. I’m all about energy and storytelling, I want people to feel something when they hear my set or see my visuals. My Dj journey started on a app. My freshamn year of college, i screenrecorded all my mixes and posted them on my instagram. Over time, that passion evolved into a full creative career where I merge music and visual direction. As a dj, I specialize in creating expierences whether that’s at clubs, private events and/or corporate. What sets me apart is my ability to read the room and get everyone dancing no matter the race. I’m most proud of staying authentic and consistent – building from nothing but dreams can be very discourging but as long as you keep god in the middle of anything you do, you’ll always succeed.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Absolutely. My biggest mission is to break generational curses and show that it’s possible to build something from pure passion and faith. I’m the first person in my family to step out and really chase my dreams full-time, so everything I do is bigger than me. I want to create a life and legacy that inspires the people around me especially the next generation to believe that their creativity and voice matter. My journey is about faith and purpose. I want to prove that you can come from anywhere and still build a name, a sound, and a story that moves people.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Yes, Definitely. To name a few i would say ” The art of Negotiation” by Tim Castle, and ” Million Dollar Habits” by Brian Tracy. I also watch a lot of interviews from creatives like Ethehiphoppreacher , Inky johnson, Nipsey hussle and Ms pat. Hearing the gems they drop, the things they went through and the motivaton they had to not stop inspire me in business and real life.
