We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dj Kickz a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dj , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you wish you had started sooner?
Everything happens for a reason but if I could go back , I would love to have started djing while I was in school. I started djing a year after I graduated in 2020. It was something I picked up a little before quarantine. Djing was honestly never planned out. I never said I was going to be a dj , it kind of just happened. If I was to dj while In high school, I believe my name would be bigger then it is now. I would’ve been doing all the homecomings, proms and pep rally’s. THATS FREE PUBLICITY!! I can think about the coulda and woulda but I’m happy I started at this time because at this moment it was meant for me. I think if I would’ve started in school , I wouldn’t be able to deal with everything that comes with it.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
If you haven’t read my first article , make sure you go check it out but to those who don’t know me, my name is Dj Kickz. I always had an ear for music, no matter the genre or selection. In 2019, I was enrolled in a beats class and found myself gaining more interest in mixing and producing music. Entering my freshman year of college, I knew I wanted to be a dj, but I didn’t have the foundation to build those steps towards my goal. I honestly didn’t know where to start. I decided to go with my gut and proceed with mixing music. I chose not to spend all of this money on a board because I was unsure if this was something I was really into doing for a long period of time but I jumped in and tried to figure out where to start. From there, I downloaded an app called ” Cross DJ” and started mixing and screen recording my mixes. They ended up receiving a lot of recognition & I chose to take it serious from there. I’m honestly most proud of myself for not giving up. If you know me then you know I’ll start a project then stop and start something new within the same week but I’ve really been staying down and sticking to this. I would like my clients/followers/fans to know people are in this world to knock you down , distract you and make you feel like you don’t deserve that spot but if you want it, DON’T EVER let a opportunity pass you up due to other peoples opinions. Failure doesn’t mean you didn’t do a good job , it just means it’s time to GET up and come at it with a different approach. My brand is more than just the “ DJ.” My brand is to also show the youth don’t put a age on your dream , start now.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson I had to unlearn was your pride only keeps you from greatness. I wasn’t the type to think I was too good for anything but I was the type to not allow anyone to say anything to me because of my pride. I can honestly say it humbled me after failing and going through the same problem over and over. I always was the type to think I knew everything & doing everything myself. I was always trying to figure everything out on my own , taking the harder route because I wasn’t trying to ask for help. After so many times you start to listen to people and really hear what they have to say .
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect to me is when people come up to you and start giving you your flowers. Getting notoriety for the work and mixes you’ve created really is like people giving you your flowers while you’re here.
