We caught up with the brilliant and insightful DJ Kamm a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi DJ Kamm, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
The first time I interviewed someone was in college and I knew from that point I wanted to write professionally. Growing up, writing was always a passion of mine along with music. When I went to college I majored in Journalism and had to take different writing and film production classes. During that time I had to interview many different people from our community, family members, and colleagues. I always knew I had a passion for writing, but I never knew how much I would love interviewing people. Taking those classes made me realize how much I had a passion for it.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I’m a DJ and a Journalist. I picked up wanting to DJ when I was a teenager and started professionally djing when I was in my early 20’s. I am a club DJ, I have DJ’d on various radio stations from Georgia, Florida, and Virginia along with numerous online radio stations. Growing up I always had a passion for music and writing. They were both healthy avenues for me to get my thoughts together. I went to college for journalism and it perfected my writing more than ever. I was asked by Pat Gloster, the creator of The R Report Magazine, to be a DJ of the month and during our interview for it, I let him know that I was also in school for journalism and he asked if I could send in some of my work. Pat loved my work and asked if I could help write some of the interviews for the magazine, of course I accepted. I am proud of all the work I do. I have some projects that are greater than others, but to be able to have the opportunity do any of it, makes me feel so blessed.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The feedback I receive is so rewarding to me. I love hearing feedback from the audience, whether it’s good or bad. Feedback from something I’ve written down to me djing a gig, is always rewarding. Even if it’s not positive feedback, it’s something I can take and learn from for the next time. Maybe there is something I can change that will make the story better, or maybe a song I forgot to play that I know I need for next time, those are things I think about.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
In my opinion, I feel like people can support better if they weren’t so quick to bash people on social media. Everyone has their own creative route that they take on their journey. Someone else’s creative route might not be your cup of tea, in that instance, say congratulations and keep it moving. It’s a tough world out there, I don’t feel like we as a society should be using our social media platforms, or any platform, to bash anyone. We should be teaching and supporting others.
