We were lucky to catch up with DJ $ickk recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, DJ thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
My most meaningful project that I have done to date would be my latest album called “More Life”. It means so much to me because I was inspired after the loss of my son Damari. I turned my grief into greatness and it became one my most greatest albums ever.
DJ, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve always loved music ever since I was a little boy and I started writing when I was 13 years old. I’ve been doing music professionally for about 7-8 years now and I’m still going. I make music that helps people who go through mental health issues. The thing that sets me apart from other artists is that fact that I’m very honest and vulnerable with my listeners and I take you on the journey with me. I tell you the good, the bad, and the ugly. At the end of the day it’s my truth no matter what. I’ve accomplished some great things along the way as well. My brand name is “$ickkgang”
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The lesson that I had to unlearn was that success happens over night. The right type of success takes time to build and achieve. I understand that I will have to have patience for greatness. I learned that through out my whole career. Now I just embrace the journey.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
A lot of creatives will stress themselves out because they want to become a star overnight and that is not the case at all. The faster you rise the harder you fall is what I believe. I tell everyone the worst thing that you can do is give up because you haven’t become successful yet. God’s timing is everything and he has the final call on everything.
