We caught up with the brilliant and insightful DJ $ickk a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, DJ thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
My most meaningful project that I’ve worked on would be for an album I put together called “In $ickk We Trust”. Now that album was basically about me being more open and honest and also showing my growth. I chose that name because I felt like more people are listening to my music than before and they trust me not to let them down.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Well I started writing music when I was 13 years old, and I’ve just been keeping up with it ever since. I’ve always been a fan of music, especially Hip Hop music. I’m From Lubbock TX but I moved to Dallas TX and tried to connect with the music scene there. Not too many people were trying to work with me so I just started my own thing. I got the name DJ $ickk from my twin brother because of the way my rhyme style was. Me and my younger brother Needo created a brand Called “$ickkgang” due to how our music is to help the people that are hurting mentally. We have two other artist that go by Zanyboi & K-Bre. I’m different because I’m actually honest in my music and I write my life. My most proudest moment would have to be when we were to able throw our very own $ickkgang concert. We did better than I thought for our first time.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I’m pretty sure that I’ll have people that won’t understand me or my journey. Also, there will be people that do understand. I’m speaking for the ones that do , that’s who I do my music for. I understand that not everybody is going to like me and that’s okay. I know who I am and what my purpose is at the end of the day. Everybody’s path is different, once I found mine I stuck to it.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
All they can really do is show actual love and support. Buy merch, spread the word, show up to concerts, download the music. Those are just a couple things you can do to get started. Support them like how you support the ones that are already successful. Do more motivation and encouragement and less taring people apart.
