We were lucky to catch up with DJ Helios recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi DJ Helios, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I recently released a new mix under my concept series, “Hype You Up”, called Vol. IV Ritmo Global. It is a 50 minute recorded DJ set that is a dynamic and energetic sound compilation, showcasing sounds from all corners of the globe. I included genres like Baile/Funk, Latin House, Afrobeats, Amapiano and UK Garage.
I’m extremely proud of this mix because it’s a true testament to my growth and evolution as a DJ. Ritmo Global was a labor of love that took me months to formulate, plan and execute.
I also did some really cool promo for the release of the mix that involved a photo shoot and during that process got to collaborate with a truly talented team of creatives – photographer, stylist, makeup artist and graphic designer.
Make sure to check out Ritmo Global! It’s on my SoundCloud for your listening pleasure.
DJ Helios, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hii! I’m DJ Helios, an audio engineer turned DJ, and I’ve been in the music and entertainment industry for the past decade. I’m a Latina, first-gen creative who spins everything from reggaeton, house, hip hop, cumbia, dembow, r&b and more.
I absolutely love collaborating with local non-profit organizations dedicated to supporting underrepresented communities, as well as partnering with women-owned brands. I pride myself on being a versatile open-format DJ, capable of adapting to any event. I’ve collaborated with prestigious brands like Espolòn, Corona, and La Colombe in Texas, spun tunes at major corporate conferences in Los Angeles and Las Vegas, and graced the decks at nightclubs in Mexico City.
In 2024, my most memorable moments thus far include sharing the stage with artists such as Billy Idol, performing at the monumental Latin music festival Besame Mucho, and proudly representing as an official SXSW artist.
I have faith in the profound impact of music on fostering community, and it serves as the driving force behind my mission as a DJ and creative.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I grew my online presence by truly tapping into who I am and by openly sharing my journey. Amidst the pandemic, I made a conscious effort to dive deep and determine the direction I wanted to take in my DJ career. I began gradually sharing content, including DJ videos, flyers for upcoming livestreams, and posts about any accomplishments each week.
By consistently posting and progressing as a DJ, I started to build a following on my social media platforms. I’ve noticed that the more attuned and aligned I am with myself, the more my online presence grows and the deeper my connection with followers becomes.
My advice for those just starting would definitely be consistency, authenticity and connection. Find messaging and content that resonates with you (the creator) and create a schedule to post or share that you can keep up with consistently. And find ways that you can truly connect with your audience and build community!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I’ve had to break away from the hustle mentality and the belief that a lack of productivity on any given day equates to a lack of progress. While I attribute my career success to my strong work ethic, I’ve come to realize the importance of achieving a healthier work-life balance. I’m aware that many of us, as children of immigrants, were raised with the notion that productivity directly correlates with our worth. We were taught that the only path to success in life was through relentless hard work, often without pause, in pursuit of our dreams.
Although working hard is crucial for entrepreneurs, burnout is a always a genuine concern, and prioritizing rest is essential for both physical and mental well-being. Nowadays, I’m extremely deliberate about how I allocate my time and energy. I schedule specific dates and times on my calendar for activities such as dining with friends, enjoying solo outings, taking rest days, and indulging in other activities that bring me joy.
