We were lucky to catch up with Dj Fergg recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dj , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
Towards the end of 2017 began to joke about becoming a DJ with my friends and family. After while I really began to research the craft itself . In 2018 I took the big step and invested in my Dj equipment. I practiced, studied and took lessons for few months before I made the announcement of me being a DJ .
Dj , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
The way I got into in the music industry was mainly from my love of music . Growing up music was always getaway for me. The creation of music had always been something that I’ve appreciated and cherished but I’ve always known that the actual process of creating was not my gift . Which is how I chose being a DJ . I still get to enjoy the art and become apart of it while enjoying my craft and creating. One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced as a Dj is definitely consistency and discipline, sometimes I honestly still struggle with them both . Entering the music industry has forced me to change the way I think and work. As a woman in a male dominated industry it is very easy to get underestimated and misunderstood. For me that has pushed me to work harder ant to always make sure I’m on point with all I do. Providing music entertainment for events is primarily my job , I also have a radio talk show upcoming in 2023 , I host mixtapes , and sell merchandise as well . One of the things I think sets me apart from other Djs is my personality , song selection and work style . I always try my best to cater to my clients needs! It is always my mission to create a fun and safe event space when I am booked to attend an event ! My perseverance is definitely what I am most proud of . Over the past few years I’ve found myself wanted to give this all up but this year alone I’ve landed my first magazine cover , music award nominations and officially a sports dj for a college university !
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Creating an image is very important in music industry but actually being great at what I do is what made people start to recognize me and acknowledge my brand as a DJ . My consistency and dedication to my brand and music is very hard to ignore . I’m constantly growing and branching out into new projects
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Once I began to build my brand I had a lot of business owners who wanted to work with me and book with me. I thought that this was great for my brand so I began to over extend myself. In that process I ended up in a lot of bag business deals . I quickly had to learn that not every opportunity is a great opportunity.
