We recently connected with DJ DHURT and have shared our conversation below.
DJ, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
My brand is often deemed different from other DJ brands because of my confidence. In most cases, the community is not use to seeing a female DJ. However, my brand is different from other DJs because I am using my skills to build other DJs in my E-Book. However, life as DJ DHurt in 2023 consists of being Asian Doll’s official DJ and pushing her digital study guide (eBook); “How to Become a DJ.” In her eBook, you will find step-by-step instructions on becoming a DJ and networking in the music industry. Her eBook also includes a quiz to test the student’s knowledge. DJ DHurt is also a music producer and enjoys making beats in her spare time. Her plans in the future are to throw events and continue to motivate and inspire young men and women to become Disc Jockeys (DJs).
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Born – Destiny Hurt is a small-town girl from Hampton, Virginia. Born on September 21st. She graduated from Bethel High School; the same school Allen Iverson graduated from. DJ DHurt completed her bachelor’s degree at Georgia State University in 2022 while becoming a full-time DJ.
How I Became a DJ.
DJ DHurt started her music career in 2018 as she DJ’d her cousin’s baby shower, and college, events. She later moved to Atlanta and worked hard at her skill. Growing her fan base in Atlanta, DJ DHurt networked with many celebrities, such as Shaq.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I had to unlearn was thinking that I was playing music for myself as a DJ. I learned that the most vital information as a DJ is understanding the crowd you are playing music for. It will make your set extremely more organized and your transitions will be more smooth. The back story comes from several experiences where I was behind the turntables and played a song I wanted to hear but the crowd did not. When I started to DJ in Atlanta my DJ colleagues would often tell me to pay attention to my crowd.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I moved from Virginia to Atlanta, I was not in the best space. I consistently watched Mike Todd for reassurance about life. I left Radford University, to attend Georgia State University in July. We almost missed registration and I also could not find housing for a couple of weeks. Now it is going on four years since I moved to Georgia and my life has changed for the better.
