DJ Chocolate, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I have two different projects that make my heart warm. The 1st is my Goddess Takeover mixtape, and the second is my Takeover event. These 2 things came about after working on a collaboration with other DJs and seeing there were no female voices on the final compilation. I have a passion for independent artist, and I especially love to highlight dope female artist. The highlighting of female artist is what the Goddess Takeover Mixtape is all about. These womxn provide feel good music that most wouldn’t have the opportunity to witness.
In that same light the Takeover event is an independent artist concert for up and coming artist where fans, media, and artist interact directly to bring the community something new. It is the live presentation of the Goddess Takeover Mixtape expanded to all artist with no gender restraints.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am an eclectic mobile DJ based in Charlotte, NC. My career began with spoken word and party promotions in Limestone University. While here, she studied music theory in all forms. As of 2013, my unique styles developed with proficiency in Serato DJ Pro, turntables and controllers as well as mentoring under various celebrity award winning DJs. In 2016 I did my 1st solo gig and decided to become a professional DJ. I went into music entertainment as the 2 Team Ent, LLC lead sound engineer and house DJ for several local venues and event spaces including all 2 Team events, Free Your Mind CLT, Wreck the Mic Wednesdays, Sanctuary Charlotte Church, Charlotte Art League and Wet Willie’s CLT. My vast knowledge of music genres is as diverse as the events where I bring high energy playlists and performances; whether an annual pool party, wedding, adult event or a kid’s celebration. Every set is more vivid and vibrant than the previous; continuously expanding my library from afro beats, edm to rock, country, rap and soul. My audiences experience the multitude of my intense provocative skills that shower them like meteors causing a unique euphoric transformation.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding thing has been the ability to set the mood and tone of an event all while conveying a story. Music can take you away from the stress of everyday life and I am the conductor. Being able to see the joy on someone’s face is an unmatched feeling.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I would like for non-creatives to understand that creators operate differently and that is ok. The creative mind doesn’t have a set time for inspiration to hit, and some conversations have an ability to spark an idea that needs to become a reality.
