We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful DJ Bitty. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with DJ below.
Alright, DJ thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
A time in my life where a risk was taken would be in 2019. This could have possibly been one of the biggest, off-the-wall decisions I’ve ever made. My choice to accept admission into NCAT. You’d ask, how was that a risk? Well, I’d never visited the school, looked at its accolades or even knew anyone within a 50 mile radius of Greensboro. To top it off, I was deferred from the institution at first. My mother wasn’t a fan of the $30,000 out of state tuition or me traveling 16+ hours away from my home in Chicago. However, I’m a firm believer in becoming uncomfortable to create a greater reality. I needed a new scenery and vibe from Chicago. As you can guess, Chicago was filled with positives and negatives. The first time I’d ever been to Greensboro was during the 2019 freshman orientation. Which is the same day I decided to risk it even more. I contacted the orientation leaders and told them about my career as a DJ. With extreme determination, I was able to shadow the orientation DJ (DJ Lil Vegas). 4 years later, as a senior, I too became that DJ performing for the orientations as a younger aspiring DJ shadowed me. Those risks, create a domino effect of rewards. Opportunities in life only work for those who work to execute the advantage.
DJ, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a 22 year old entrepreneur, co-founder, executive leader, developer, financial advisor, friend, and future innovator of the next generation. It’s safe to say I’m a jack of all trades. With so many talents and interests, it can be hard sometimes to focus. However, I’ve managed to prioritize my first love which is music. In music, I’ve founded ATM Enterprise. The company is a combination of musical systems that aim to aid and develop the craft of artists. We have a division for DJ services & development, composing & engineering, and also financial guidance. This company has always been a piece of my success since I was in Chicago. You could look at contracts from 2016 and see the heading “ATM Enterprises”. Alongside my own ventures, I’ve been blessed with multiple opportunities to be apart of the future. Mainly speaking on my partnership with what is now known as, the Hot 10 Music Group. I am the Chief Operating Officer and Co-Founder. The label aims to be the bridge between collegiate artists and the worldwide industry. We put 10 select artists from each HBCU (currently chartered at 5 institutions) and market their image. With its launch in 2021, we’ve been able to break major ground. Our artists have performed alongside over 7 mainstream artists, been featured in several magazines, networked with over 50 industry A&R personnel, and even have had the opportunity to sign to major labels. Personally, I’ve always seen this brand becoming a staple in HBCU history. Especially since we are the first of its kind to do something like this on this scale. Currently, the Hot 10 Music Group is chartered at NCATSU, CAU, Spelman, MoreHouse, and Jackson State. In 2024, the label plans to expand to 2 more of the top HBCUs. Each year, the label will expand to an institution near you!
How did you build your audience on social media?
When I first came into NCAT, Twitter was the social media king. No one really used Instagram or Sidechat (which wasn’t even created at the time). I noticed before I could step foot into the state of North Carolina, I could still have an appropriate presence. On Twitter, I utilized the art of humor. I’d post interesting or controversial ideas/topics to create engagement. Within no time, my Twitter account was gaining 35+ followers a day. That may not seem like a lot but it averaged around 250 -300 new followers a week. This gave me a great advantage to take the lead as the “#1 NCAT23 DJ”, which is exactly what happened. The audience and engagement I had gained from Twitter trickled over to Instagram. Through these tactics and what I call, “Spam-following”, my brand started to get exposure to a larger audience. This audience became the base foundation for my success while in North Carolina. If you are just starting to build a social media presence, make sure you’re consistent and ready to put in the work!
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The best strategy has always been word of mouth. There is no other advertisement that is free and more effective. When I was a DJ in Chicago, the main source of promotion that I had was word of mouth. It travels so fast and frequently that a card or commercial could never catch up to that speed. It’s still a proven strategy that works wonders.
