We were lucky to catch up with Dj Big Twin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dj Big Twin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Music has always been instilled in my heart and soul, whether I was singing in my church’s choir or playing in the Drumline in middle and high school. Although I was versed in musical composition, I never imagined or considered being a DJ until I attended Valdosta State University (VSU) in Valdosta, Ga. I majored in Mass Media with emphasis in Radio & Television. While working in college Radio (Station WVVS 90.9FM) I was asked to DJ an event by a local promoter. I advised him that I never DJ ’ed before, but since I had radio and sound equipment knowledge, I accepted the opportunity. I brought My CD book, set up my equipment, and the rest was history. I was blessed with more opportunities to learn and grow from other DJs such as DJ Mike Mars, DJ AK, and Big Nick. The more they instilled in my craft, the more it allowed me to develop my own niche and become a more polished DJ. Over the past 15 years, I’ve DJ’ ed numerous events including corporate, birthdays/anniversaries, clubs and now mainly weddings. One of my biggest accomplishments throughout my career has been winning a Southern Entertainment Award in 2021.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Fredrick Brown but in the night life or on radio world I am known as “Dj Big Twin” . I have an identical twin brother named Derrick. For over 15+ years I’ve never been afraid to take risks and try new avenues, whether it’s live music, radio, or even going virtual. I currently produce radio mix-shows for several stations in Georgia: Foxie 105FM (Columbus), K92.7FM (Columbus), and 107.9 The Beat (Valdosta). I also livestream an online R&B mix-show on Twitch every Wednesday night called “Wine Down Wednesdays”.. This show created an online community named by fans The Vibe Lounge (for music lovers to connect during COVID).. I consider myself a DJ without limitations, and being in the entertainment industry has opened doors to my current business ventures. This includes weddings, corporate functions, and events. As an event/wedding specialist I have to be ready for all issues, whether its trying to follow a tight schedule, or handling weddings where there is no planner. Along with my emcee Alex Perry “AP” and we’improvise on the spot and basically run the show as if it were rehearsed and strategically planned.
I would tell potential or future clients, that my main focus is ensuring that people are having the most memorable and exciting time possible.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Months before the world went into lock down due to Covid, I decided to step out and become a full time entrepreneur. I felt that it was time to become my own boss,. I chose to be self-employed because of my son. My son (Breeland) has autism and being the father of a special needs child can be a challenging task. Making his world make sense for him requires us to follow a strict schedule., I spend my days taking my son to all of his appointments and therapies. Balancing this along with his home-school schedule is quite a strenuous daily routine. Becoming my own boss helped me to to have the flexibility to create my own schedule so that I can accomadate his needs. At first things were great, then the pandemic hit everything changed financially. Bookings were either lost or rescheduled due to lock down and fears of covid spreading. This affected me mentally and professionally. I dealt with depression and anxiety. I was trying to figure out ways to provide for my family if the world is closed.. There were no weddings, no parties, and no events. This meant there was no money. Since were were stuck in the house the internrt was our only connection to other people. While checking out facebook, tik tok, and twitch .I noticed how djs were hosting virtual events . I was able to hear djs from different parts of the world, without leaving the house. They gave me the motivation to get back into the swing of things. Some may say that the pandemic was the worst thing that they dealt with, but for me it was the best thing because I got back on track and I fell in love with the culture all over again, Dj-ing was like therapy, it helped me to work through my depression and brought happiness.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
As a creator my journey of learning never ends. In this field technology and current trends are constantly changing. What worked last month may not work today so I have to stay ahead of the learning curve. I can’t be afraid to step outside of the box, and try new ventures. This is not your typical nine to five routine. I always have to keep an open mind, stay up to date on the latest trends. I cannot rely on tradition or what has worked in the past.
