We were lucky to catch up with Dj Big Mobile recently and have shared our conversation below.
DJ BIG Mobile, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Music has always been a huge part of my life. As a teenager and throughout my college experience, I curated stacks of burnt CD playlists for every mood or album that was hot at the time. I’ve always considered myself a true music head. My first exposure to DJing came through an unexpected source—a former student of mine during the early years of my career working as a college administrator. They introduced me to the art of DJing, and I was hooked. I started learning the basics after that brief conversation. Then I started to teach myself the basics – bit by bit. Not long after, I began organizing parties for friends and family whenever I visited my hometown of Chicago. This became my training ground, where I could practice for hours and sharpen my skills, see how folks were vibing to my style. It quickly became a tradition nearly whenever I came back to Chicago, a “DJ Mobile” party was about to go down. I did it all for the love of music. In fact, I didn’t get my first paid gig until nearly 5 years later after starting out. Those early years were all about passion, practice, and perfecting my sound, which set the foundation for where I am today as a DJ.

DJ BIG Mobile, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
What I Provide
Today, I offer professional DJ services for a wide range of events—weddings, corporate events, private parties, and community gatherings. My goal is always the same: to create an unforgettable experience where folks can sink into the music. I specialize in curating soulful vibes, blending genres like R&B, hip-hop, neo-soul, house, jazz and afrobeats; ensuring that the energy of the event flows seamlessly from start to finish. Ultimately, I’ve also mastered being a generalist. No event is the same so being prepared for a range of different communities, generations and music types sets me apart from many to most. I can create a beautiful experience under any genre umbrella. Beyond just playing the music, I see myself as someone who helps to create moments—helping people to connect, vibe, celebrate, and enjoy life.
What Sets Me Apart
I believe what sets me apart is my approach. I take the craft very seriously, I don’t just play tracks; I am masterfully reading the crowd for responses, every slight body language that can give me glimpse of the crowd’s energy and reaction to what I am playing. I am responsible for creating a mood that matches the event while ensuring that every event feels unique. This is where much of my skill-set in my full-time professional life intersects with my artistry as a DJ. My background as an educator and equity practitioner, allows me to understand people beyond the surface, as well as have an appreciation for a range of differences; whether in appearance or opinion. I translate that same approach to the DJ craft by always having curiosity for something new and different. I love introducing audiences to new artists and sounds – coupled with the classics, new bangers and bops. I know how to engage diverse groups and create a space where everyone feels welcome and engaged. Music is a form of storytelling, and I pride myself on curating a set that resonates with the audience, whether it’s a wedding reception or a laid-back gathering. I also prioritize professionalism, clear communication, and delivering beyond expectations, which has helped me build lasting relationships with my clients.
Problems I Solve for Clients
Clients come to me because they want a DJ who can do more than just hit play—they want someone who understands how to create a memorable experience, someone who can manage the energy of the room, and someone who knows how to mix genres seamlessly to keep the crowd engaged. Whether it’s setting the perfect vibe for a corporate event or making sure a wedding has the right balance of fun and elegance, I offer peace of mind. They know that when I’m behind the decks, they don’t have to worry about anything.
What I’m Most Proud Of
I’m most proud of the reputation I’ve built through word-of-mouth and genuine connections. I’ve grown my business organically, without flashy marketing—just by showing up, delivering great experiences, and letting the music and vibe speak for itself. Seeing clients come back for multiple events or recommend me to others is incredibly rewarding. I’m also proud of the versatility I bring, whether in the monthly mixes I release on various platforms, spinning at a high-energy party or just creating a smooth, soulful atmosphere for an intimate gathering. I’ve managed to do it by putting in the time to learn, taking chances outside the box and upholding a high standard for the craft as I do with anything I commit to executing.
What I Want People to Know
I want potential clients and followers to know that I’m passionate about what I do. This isn’t just a business for me—it’s about creating something special every time I’m on the ones and twos. I also believe in the power of community, which is why I’ve started to think about how I can use my platform to create spaces where young professionals of color can come together, vibe, and build something lasting. Whether it’s through DJ services or signature events that my wife and I (#Vinsiko) will host in the near future – my mission is always about connecting people through great music and great energy.

Can you open up about a time when you had a really close call with the business?
Early in my DJ career in California, I faced a moment that could have ended everything before I really got started. I was booked for a Law Firm launch event – one of my first major gigs since moving west. As I always do before any event – I packed all of my equipment meticulously—or so I thought—and drove an hour to the venue. As I began setting up, I realized with a sinking feeling that I had forgotten the most crucial item: my laptop! Panic set in and my anxiety skyrocketed. Yet, at this moment I had to remain composed externally for my client. I was highly recommended as my referral came with high compliments. My client was expecting me to deliver. Without a laptop, CDJ or my music library – how could I possibly DJ this event? I had to figure it out and come up with a solution fast. Thankfully, a friend who lived nearby came to my rescue by lending me their laptop. However, his laptop had nothing for me to build from—no DJ program, music library, no playlists – nothing. I downloaded my DJ program (Shout Out to Virtual DJ Pro Version) and started to gather music from my various cloud drives and built a set on the fly. I searched for and downloaded songs in real time while reading the crowd and keeping the energy alive. As the event was set to wrap up, my client continued to extend my set – hour by hour. He handed me the cash each hour that was extended. It was one of the most stressful moments of my life and DJ career, but it taught me an invaluable lesson about preparation, adaptability and the importance of good friends. Since that day, I’ve developed a foolproof checklist to ensure I never leave anything behind again. This includes backups for all of my DJ supplies as well. That experience didn’t just test my skills—it shaped the way I approach every gig, with a focus on preparation, professionalism, and being ready for anything.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being a DJ is knowing that I get to be a part of some of the most memorable moments in people’s lives. Whether it’s a wedding, a milestone birthday, or a company holiday party, these are unforgettable experiences that people will cherish forever. Being tied to those moments and knowing that I helped create the soundtrack to someone’s special day is incredibly fulfilling. Beyond that, I’ve been fortunate to build amazing connections with people who fondly remember me as being a key part of their celebration. In some cases, friendships have blossomed as a result. I also meet a ton of awesome people from all walks of life, whether it’s the event attendees, the staff, other dope vendors or business owners. It’s those relationships and shared memories that make this work so meaningful for me.
