We recently connected with DJ and have shared our conversation below.
DJ, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Like many hobbies and creative outlets, Pick Jimi was spawned out of the pandemic. I was a part of the first massive wave of people to suddenly be unemployed. I fell back on an old hobby, that helped with my overall mental health, smoking cigars and combined that with my love of telling stories with a camera. . But like many other people, I had no income so paying for cigars meant buying more affordable cigars. And thus, the quest for the best budget cigar began. And that has morphed into what my channel is now. It’s smoking cigars, but with a focus on community, mental health and educating the very gullible community on the marketing scams they fall for time and time again.
DJ, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got into videography working with a turnaround consulting firm back in 2014. When I launched my own full service design business in 2016, I knew video would be a main component for my business’s success. I worked primarily with start ups and small businesses to help them tell their story and grown their brand. I use my years of knowledge, design skills, production experience, and story telling to make Pick Jimi Cigar Reviews standout. I got into cigars from a former co-worker and feel in love with the culture, community, and artistry that is cigars.
What sets my channel apart from others is the combination of high production value with real life story telling. I’m definitely not the most knowledgeable about cigars, but i am certainly one of the funniest.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
When I first launched my channel my initial goal was just to see if I could capture an audience. I didn’t tell any of my friends or family that I was launching the channel. I wanted every sub I got to be earned. I quickly achieved that goal, so moved thee goal post to be “I want to be able to smoke cigars for free” and within a year, I achieved that goal. I have several companies who frequently send me in cigars to review and feature. So now, my stretch goal is to hit 100,000 subscribers. I don’t want internet clout or money from this whole experience. I just want a silly plaque with a silver play button on it.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
winning people over is the most rewarding aspect of being a creative. Expressing myself if great, but turning someone who started out hating my content into a fan is the best.
