We were lucky to catch up with Divine Mupepe recently and have shared our conversation below.
Divine , appreciate you joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I was asked to make cupcakes for a friends birthday which was so random because I had never baked in my life. I pushed myself and attempted something simple and since their favourite colour was blue I made 12 simple vanilla cupcakes with blue icing. When I had bought it to the party (even though it was a small amount) people kept asking who made it and how much I was charging. I personally didn’t think it was amazing, I found it so basic that I offered to make it for free for people. Eventually I had a good amount of customers and a few of them kept insisting for me to start charging at least a small amount, which I ended up doing

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Divine and I started my business at home. I make cakes and desserts for different occasions but at the moment I specialise in cupcakes.
I feel like getting in the industry when I had started allowed me to grow my business rapidly as there weren’t as many bakers, especially on social media. Majority of us are all used to just our regular cake shops but after a while you realise that some cake shops were limited with options.
One thing I am most proud of is the love that I receive from my customers, this is either by sharing my business, purchasing from me or even just paying extra!

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn relaying on people. This may sound harsh or straightforward but the reason I say this is when you’re starting a business, not everyone around you would support you easily, share your business or even contribute to it. At one point I became so focused on the fact that a lot of people I knew personally wouldn’t support me that I started to feel discouraged.

We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
My business partner is literally my older sister. She has been supporting me from day 1! She always pushed me to officially open my business and when I had a an order for cakes that maybe I’ve never tried she would always encourage me and tell me that I can easily do it.
During the times I couldn’t do the cakes because of other priorities instead of her allowing me to decline the booking she always stepped up.
