We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dishane Daniels a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dishane , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
Yes I am happier being a business owner. I know what it feels like to have a regular job. Having a regular job never made me feel good . A regular job for me was what I had to do to provide for my family. A job also keep me a float while I begin to work on starting and growing my business. Once I got my business off the ground a bit I transition into my business full time and haven’t looked back sense.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
I Dishane Daniels a 39 year old Wife , mother of three sons by birth , a daughter and son by way of marriage.
As a little girl , I grow up wanting to fit in and never feeling pretty enough. So through out I grow up doing things to make others happy . A lot of times forgetting about myself .
My mom would do a few of her friends hair and the looks on their faces were priceless after seeing the finished results . My Aunt had me do a hair care service on her hair at the age of 11 or 12 which I had never done . It lit a burning fire in me that was already there to put a smile on peoples faces and help them feel good about their self.
Along the way I had some tough hurtles to get through. On hurtle was becoming a teen age mom and I had to run back and forth to hospital, work , and going to school. Ultimately I had to make a big sacrifice which was dropping out of school. This made me have to find away not only for me but also for my son . I took on Various jobs like babysitting, kFC , Convention Center as a janitor, CNA/GNA Nursing of 16 years , and more. A few years later I had two more sons.
One day I decided to stop by a cosmetology school but yet again there was something hanging over my head . I didn’t have a high school diploma which was required.
In 2012 I decided that I was going to get my diploma so I went a adult education school. In June I took the test Failed and went back in July of 2012 and PASSED. I enrolled in Cosmetology school October,2012.
Now Comes July 2021 I want to take my career a bit farther. I decided to add Realtor to my titles. I PASSED the class now came time to take the state board and I was having a hard time . It seemed like every time it was time to take the test something was going on . I lost my Grandma in March of 2022 which took a toll on me . That was not a easy road to ride . I failed the Maryland State side of the test three times and the national side five time . All together I finally PASSED the test as an entity June of 2022.
I must say if it had not been for the people who never would allow me to doubt myself. People like my Husband, Mom, Kids , some family, and friends . I don’t know what I would have done. Which is why I’m simply grateful.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
From becoming a teenage mom, to dropping out of school, to losing my grandma , fighting for my marriage, failing cosmetology test , and failing Realtor test.
In it all I never gave up and guess what I PASSED all the test.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to learn when to make things about me and things about others . I leaned that if I don’t fight for me ( Self Love) and the things I want in life . Everyone that truly needs me will not get to experience me properly.
