We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dina Torres a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dina, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
The call came without warning. One day I had a job, benefits, security on a hair salon the next day, nothing. After years of experience in the beauty industry, I thought finding another position would be easy. I had the skills, the track record, the passion. But week after week, the rejections kept coming. No callbacks. No offers. Nothing stable.
I remember sitting at my kitchen table, bills piling up, wondering how someone with my experience and dedication could suddenly feel so invisible in the beauty market. That’s when the fear shifted into something else – determination. The risk? Instead of continuing to wait for someone else to see my value, I decided to create my own opportunity. I opened Eyelashes by Dina.

I’m Dina, a 50-year-old Latina entrepreneur and the founder of Eyelashes by Dina, a boutique lash studio in Tanglewood, Houston. But my journey to becoming a business owner wasn’t planned – it was born out of necessity, resilience, and a refusal to let setbacks define me.
