We recently connected with Dina Cruz and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Dina thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I’ve always wanted to pursue performing of some sort professionally. I remember being Clara, a sugar plum fairy and a part of the chorus of the same Christamas recital of the Nutcracker in second grade. As an adult acting and modeling was always a “good gig” for extra cash when my corporate job allowed time for it. Being a creative is never looked at as a serious career option by first generation immigrant parents. So I tried “adulting.” But it never really worked out. There’s something about trying to live a “normal” life and having a starving artist inside you that starts to naguntil you feed into it. I decided on my 30th birthday to just live a life of no regrets. So when stand up presented itself soon after that I thought why not? And I’ve been on stage ever since.

Dina, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Like all great adventures my life in stand up started by mistake. I literally tripped on life and landed right into comedy. I’ve always modeled and acted from a very young age. But at 36 I found myself a newly divorced, single mom, giving out life advice for free so I figured why not make it entertaining. What I am most proud of is the progress I’ve made these last 2 and a half years in what can be considered the hardest city to do stand up comedy at. But I do want my followers to know nothing about me is an overnight success. I’ve put the work in to see the progress and I’m so excited for them and I to discover what’s next together for both myself and the Miami comedy scene.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I think the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is knowing you can envoke some type of emotion in a fellow human being. Making someone laugh is amazing. But making someone laugh till they cry is pure joy. I think artists are lucky we get to connect with masses of people on a level some people will never get to experience. There’s a certain unexplainable magic in that.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The lesson I had to unlearn was the idea that life had to be this cookie cutter picture to be perfect. For most of my life I put off being a creative because it wasn’t “stable” or it was “just a gig” even though it was the one thing that made me feel most fulfilled. It wasn’t till my life forced me to say yes to my wants first. Sometimes we know what’s best for ourselves and we should do that regardless of how uncouth or crazy you look to the world or even to your closest family and friends.
