We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dimitra Korri a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dimitra, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project I’ve ever worked on was sharing my figure skating with the 2023 Burning Man Project. It was truly an honor and particularly meaningful for me to share my artistry on ice at Burning Man 2023 because I dedicated my figure skating show to suicide awareness. Suicide is an ongoing issue that is plaguing youth more today than ever before because of how connected yet disconnected our society has become through technology and social media. Sharing my art with the burning man community reminded me of how important connection and expression are to help motivate and inspire each other to keep moving forward in life and to find common ground with those around us in order to feel included and be heard.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
For as long as I can remember I have always been an ice skater and a musician. I started ice skating, singing and playing the piano when I was about six years old. Later in life I picked up a camera in a video production class in high school where I discovered I could tell stories through video. I found that to be extremely inspiring and I decided to double major in Film Production and Communication Studies. Since film complimented my figure skating, meaning that one medium allowed me to showcase the other, I quickly became addicted to creating short form videos featuring my skating synched up to music. These fun video edits for social media eventually lead to longer form video projects such as short films, music videos, short form documentaries, and journalistic pieces that then landed me a job on my first feature length documentary in Los Angeles. I finally moved on to direct my own music videos, since I love music and film, and became an international award-winning director for the music video “Quarantine Valentine” by “Kitteh x Kitteh”. I just completed my second music video for “Kitteh x Kitteh” called “y don’t u stay” which I filmed in Greece. My work has been featured in many festivals worldwide and I am an advocate for female representation in the film industry. I also love combining my passions of singing and directing.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is when you realize that your art is actually making a positive impact on society. All art has the capability to make people think but good art has the capability to make people take action. In order to start a movement or to change virtually anything about your life there must first be an inciting incident. An artistic work, whether that is a figure skating performance, a piece of music, or a film, can very well be the incident that influences a person’s thoughts and can then lead to a change in their behavior. Art has the power to transform and heal us and I think that is why many people gravitate towards the arts both in practice and in consumption. It is extremely rewarding when you can inspire even one person to try and be the best that they can be in life. This is something that I accomplished in my new book “Dimitra Ice Skates” which is for children ages 5+ and is now available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble. The book is designed with activity pages to get kids thinking about healthy foods, to get up and dance and to imagine themselves being great at a task of their choice. When people tell me that I inspired them to do something, even if that “something” is as simple as getting out of bed and going to the gym, I am filled with gratitude.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goals as a creative are to inspire people to try new things, to do what others say is “impossible”, to motivate people to be open to new experiences and to travel to new places. My mission is for others to follow my lead and move forward to live healthy and inspiring lives themselves. I encourage people to challenge themselves but also to always check in with themselves. Especially now after the pandemic, I want to encourage everyone to put their mental health first because without that we have nothing. Another force that is driving my creative journey is finding new ways to combine ideas to create new conceptualized tech and art pieces. For example, in my directorial work with “Kitteh x Kitteh” you can see how I took my dream of singing and skating to a whole new level in the music video “Quarantine Valentine”. In this film I combined the VR gaming world with figure skating and electronic dance music. The video is now available to watch on the Kitteh x Kitteh YouTube channel. I am working towards building an even bigger community of artists to expand on the concept of combining the gaming realm with music, perhaps through VR technology, just like in the music video, “Quarantine Valentine”. You can check out more of my work on the Dimitra Korri YouTube channel or follow me on Spotify and Apple Music as “Dimitra Korri”. You can listen to more EDM tracks by “Kitteh x Kitteh” on all music streaming platforms as well.
