Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dimestate Don. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Dimestate, thanks for joining us today. Alright – so having the idea is one thing, but going from idea to execution is where countless people drop the ball. Can you talk to us about your journey from idea to execution?
Like most creatives ideas are generated by the millisecond. I had seen women and men with strong voices lead our choirs in the church. Fellowshipping and spreading their energy, love, and message, showed me exactly what I was meant to do. I began first freestyle rapping and singing to public beats or simple beats I’d made. That evolved to me finding friends who wanted to help craft a new sound and feeling. My brother & local dj Jared Hall (Dmndstr), a producer from NYC, WowJust7n, and my cousin, Alvin Malone helped me craft a lot of the production for my music. With them, It took me growing within myself to make the tracks complete. Finding the confidence within my judgement wasn’t easy. You start hearing melodies, placing the words within that, then comes recording it. Laying down the vocals with conviction, passion, clarity… CLARITY! A inaudible recording is worthless of course. After you’ve recorded, all portions of what will be the song there is the arrangement process, then you have the record.
Dimestate, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Dimestate Don is a recording artist born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee. “I began first making music at the age of 10, singing in choirs with the support and guidance of my father. In 2020 two years after his passing, I decided to release my first single under my alias now, Dimestate Don. Previously in 2019 I released 3 singles under the name Don Sun Chile, A play on my reason for making music.” In July of 2020, She Like Me, produced by Jared Hall, was released. This release generated buzz for her locally. At the same time to make ends meet she began selling graphic designs to local artists. “Mainly other rappers or promoters hit me for graphic designs and a few still do. That became another way to network and share other facets of my creativity.” “Things that give the most satisfaction since doing is firstly creating a imprint with Dimestate, my camp, my stumping ground. Then, secondly would be, creating the camaraderies and ties with fellow creators here in my city. Competition is how we look at everything in life, but knowing that we can rely on our community one way or another is major. You’re only as strong as those around you.”
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
That’s a question I ask myself all the time. Not because of uncertainty but instead reassurance. I always felt as if naturally, I was only good at one or two things and they both fell under art. That reason expanded the slightest impact and influence I had. That gave me more motivation, push, drive continuously. Spreading energy, encouraging and unifying others. Another part, is me always trying to impress my father and with him no longer with us it’s left a lot of internal pressure to put my all, and I mean all into my craft.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Early on, I wish I knew who I now know. The peers, the engineers, producers, beat makers, A&R’s, managers etc. Who knows where I could be now. These types of people are able to put in words for you whenever however, help craft your sound, image, branding. Like they say things happen when they should, grateful to everyone I’ve came across and work(ed) alongside.
