Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dilpreet Shah. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Dilpreet thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
I am happy working as a creative professional. Being an artist brings its own challenges. It can be a highly competitive field, and financial stability can be uncertain, especially in the early stages of one’s career. The pressure to consistently produce good quality work, and the need to balance artistic expression with commercial viability, also poses challenges. Coming from a purely technical background, with a bachelor’s degree in Engineering, I faced initial skepticism from my family when I expressed my desire to pursue photography professionally. However, their support, coupled with my unwavering dedication and passion, helped me overcome those reservations.
Having a regular job offers stability, steady income, and its own benefits. It provides a structured routine and a sense of security that may appeal to some people. However, satisfaction for me comes when I am working in a creative environment. Being happy on the job is the most important thing for me.
At the end, the decision to pursue a career as an artist or have a regular job depends on personal preferences and goals. I think I thrive in a creative environment, while others may find happiness in different types of work.
Dilpreet , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Originally from Delhi, India, I moved to Los Angeles in 2021, dedicating myself to a full-time career in photography. My journey into photography started after transitioning from an engineering career. Art, in various forms, such as graphic design and fine art, has always been a significant part of my life since high school. The power of visual communication has captivated me, and photography has become the language through which I express myself creatively.
As a graduate of New York Film Academy, Los Angeles, I have specialized in fashion and product photography, catering to both brands and individuals. Curating varied aesthetics has become more than just a hobby; it is now an integral part of my professional work. Whether shooting on location or in a controlled environment of a studio, each setting presents unique opportunities for creativity. I am where I am now because of my consistency in delivering good work, in my art style, and being myself. I have got the opportunity to work with brands in the United States and India over the course of my photography journey, and have my work featured in several magazines. Recently, I got the opportunity to shoot for New York Fashion Week’s Fall 2023, to which I am eternally grateful.
Throughout my journey, I have embraced curiosity and self-teaching, constantly exploring new ideas and techniques. Attention to detail has been a hallmark of my work, earning me appreciation from those who have seen my work. While my journey has had its fair share of challenges, I have been fortunate to have a support system that believed in my artistic pursuits. Coming from a purely technical background, with a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, I faced initial skepticism from my family when I expressed my desire to pursue photography professionally. However, their support, coupled with my unwavering dedication and passion, helped me overcome those reservations. My engineering training has been invaluable in mastering the art of problem-solving, allowing me to excel both on location and in the studio while creating editorial and commercial content for clients.
I am deeply grateful for the opportunities that have shaped my journey thus far, and I remain open to experimentation and embracing new ideas.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist has to be the idea of self expression. Creating art allows me to express my thoughts, emotions, and perspectives in a unique and personal way. It provides a platform for artists to communicate their ideas and feelings to the world, fostering a sense of authenticity and personal growth.
Another beautiful thing about being a creative is the power to connect with people across cultural, linguistic, and geographical boundaries. It is rewarding when you find that other people can resonate with your work. Art can be a catalyst for dialogue and inspiration for others.
Engaging in artistic pursuits is an ongoing process of self-discovery and growth. A project I did last year titled “Ball of Burden”, visually represents the concept of self-sabotage and its impact on my life. I sought deeper insight into my own thoughts and behaviors. The project served as a catalyst for personal growth, aiming to overcome my self-sabotaging tendencies and foster a healthier mindset. Through the powerful imagery and introspective exploration in “Ball of Burden,” I was trying to open up a dialogue about the internal struggles faced by many individuals. The project invites viewers to reflect on their own experiences and encourages greater understanding and empathy toward those grappling with imposter syndrome and self-sabotage.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Recognition and appreciation is the most important thing society can actively do to support artists and creatives. This can be done through promoting and attending art exhibitions, cultural events, supporting and sharing their work on social media platforms. Encourage public discussions about the importance of art and its impact on society can foster greater understanding and appreciation for artists’ contributions. Society can advocate for fair compensation for artists, ensuring they receive adequate pay for their work, and not just pay in exposure and experience. Implementing supportive policies, such as copyright protection and intellectual property rights, can safeguard artists’ creations and encourage creativity without fear of exploitation.
