Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dillon Greenberg. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Dillon, thanks for joining us today. Alright, let’s jump into one of the most exciting parts of starting a new venture – how did you get your first client who was not a friend or family?
My first real client as a Social Media Manager was working for a Production and Events Company and managing their two accounts. One account for their Production Company and another was for the Web Series they were producing.
A former work colleague reffered me, and when we had our first interview me and the whole team instantly connected. It was a really amazing fit because they needed a Social Media Manager that specifically had knowledge of the film and entertainment industry due to their Web Series and advanced studio capabilities.
Luckily, I am also an actress and award-winning maker for my web series, MARIAS: The Web Series, on YouTube. I was so excited that I would be able to use both my skills as an artist and Social Media Manager to help them build their brand.
For this company, I went on-site once a month to help take content when needed for special events or filming days. I also fully managed both accounts. It was a really great client that ended up being a very long contract!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I first got into Social Media Management because many of my creative friends in the NYC area were impressed with how I was doing my social media for my Web Series, and I started helping them part time. In 2020, I began my own blog and brand, Behind The Scenes With Dillon, and began my journey as a content creator. After my blog took off I was able to secure more clients from people seeing my personal work as well as my past clients.
I manage a lot of smaller accounts in the entertainment industry, but I also help many small businesses and have worked for lager clients in Tech Startups as well.
For now, I offer three services- Social Media Management, Content Creation, and Coaching.
For Social Media Management, I will manage the clients content and post on all social channels with footage given to me by the client. This can also include editing of raw footage given.
Content Creation is full curation and creation of photos and videos. For Social Media Management, this usually means the client has to be local. I am also a UGC (User Generated Content) Creator. I will make content for brands that they will use as paid ads or that they use organically for their social media channels.
For my coaching, I offer one on one zoom classes. We go over how to build your unique brand, discuss strategy, learn how to create a posting schedule, and I will do a full social media audit across all of their channels. The one on one classes are really great if you need help with social but don’t necessarily have a large marketing budget.
I think what sets me apart from different Social Media Managers and Content Creators is my creativity. As a professional actor, producer, and artist, I already have a natural ability to think outside the box and come up with unique and innovative ideas. This creativity can be applied to creating engaging social media content such as graphics, captions, taking video content, and even coming up with marketing strategies.
I started a Social Media Management Instagram earlier this year called @socialwithdillon. You can always follow me there for more info on my services!
My personal blog/acting account is @behindthesceneswithdillon.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I don’t know if it’s necessarily a story, but I was just consistent in my posting and content creation and became serious about it. It takes a while to build a following, but if you are consistent you will get there. I think I started posting 2 times a week doing static photos. Eventually, I decided I would add in a video a week, and then slowly post more. Once it became a habit and I was consistent my social media just started growing.
It is also important to figure out what kind of content your audience likes. Look at what content is performing the best and stick to that. Unfortunately, there will be times when you want to make content that you know your audience doesn’t like. But at the end of the day, it’s your followers who are giving you likes, comments, and engagement so you need to figure out a niche that you enjoy that your followers like as well.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I started getting into social media in 2020. Before the pandemic, I was a Brand Ambassador and Promotional Model. I was really enjoying it and loved working events, but when the pandemic started there were no events for almost 2 years. During quarantine, I was on social media a lot kind of bored looking at influencers and content creators, and thought to myself…I can do that! I also realized that this could mostly be done remotely and I would never have to worry about anything shutting down which is why I pivoted. I already knew a lot about branding through being a Brand Ambassador, and as an actress and filmmaker, I knew how to produce content. That’s where I got the idea to start content creation.
Before the pandemic, I was also helping people with social media management in a part-time capacity but didn’t seek it out full-time. When events shut down that is when I started working on getting more clients and trying to work up to it full-time. It did take me a while but eventually I got there!
