We recently connected with Dilemastronauta and have shared our conversation below.
Dilemastronauta , appreciate you joining us today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
The concept of “ making it” can be a bit confusing, what does it mean to make it? I feel like you make it – happen-. As an entrepreneur there are ups and downs, It never ends. My favorite artists are constantly making it. In the music business there are moments when you think you can touch the sky. Other times you struggle financially or emotionally to keep going. I personally feel like making it is a choice to pursue your own happiness using art as the vehicle. If at some point you need to get regular job it doesn’t mean you didn’t make it. It just means that you’re going through a financial low. But if you continue, the up will be waiting for you.I feel there are no shortcuts to get to where you want to be. Off course you have to study your craft, but living life as a creative, artistic person has a unique journey that must be experienced.
Dilemastronauta , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I was chosen to be a sound maker, a drummer. When I was 7 the school I was at held an event. One of the teachers played Afro Colombian music of the Atlantic Coast. I felt a shock of electricity down the spine. It was the cosmos speaking through the drums. I was never the same after that.
It is because of this calling that I have been to Europe, Africa and all over the United States. I know now that I don’t entertain folks. I am part of a healing force. Music keeps the world moving.
Speaking of the type of music I make, my music will navigate the worlds of tradition vs non tradition. What I mean is that my music is a combination of the past and the present. Study history vs embracing the moment. AKA Jazz by Astronauts.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Two Books have really helped. One is Mo’ Beta Blues by Questlove the famous drummer for Jimmy Fallon’s late night.
This book will give you an insight of someone that makes art and is able to make it not only sustainable but profitable. I understood that just because you are spiritual about music doesn’t mean you have to be broke.
The second book is “ The Mysticism of Sound” by Indian Guru Hazrat Inayat Khan. This book gives you insight on the effects of music on people, and the fact that music as sonic waves have shaped humanity ( literally and physically) . From the Big Bang,
music as we know is the eco of the explosion that made our universe.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
To be perfectly honest, I don’t see creatives or non creatives. What I see is a society where people let the arts and creative thinking influence their lives. What I mean is that there is creativity even within people that are considered non artistic or non entrepreneurial. However, people who change the world in any type of field, are inspired by music, movies, painting, sports etc.
I would say to anybody who is reading this: learn to play music, painting or acting. If you do I promise it will allow you to say things that are imposible to express otherwise.
Oral language has emotional limits that are to be expressed through other mediums
