We recently connected with Diego Torres Kuri and have shared our conversation below.
Diego, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I was recently flown to Mumbai, India to film a movie with one of the greatest movie stars in Bollywood, Ajay Devgn. This was an amazing experience for me. It’s a movie based on a real story about the golden era of football (soccer) in India. I’ve played soccer my whole life so this was kind of a full-circle moment for me. Also, India is one the most spiritual places in the whole world and I have become a spiritual person in the last couple of years so it was also exciting for me to go to this place and get to know their culture and way of living. The production and all the people involved in the movie that I got to meet were amazing and super welcoming. As for the project itself, I believe this will be a very important movie for Bollywood because it deviates from their comedic style and captures a very inspiring story based on true events. It’s a story about struggle, beating the odds, belief in oneself and teamwork. It wouldn’t surprise me if it ends up being nominated for multiple awards. It was an honor to be part of this. I got to play an Australian soccer player during the Melbourne Olympic Games of 1956. The preparation was tough, learning the Australian accent, polishing my soccer skills, researching that era, etc. But to be honest that’s one of the things I enjoy the most as an actor: the process; building the character and immersing myself in the story. The film is scheduled to come out this year and I’m really excited to watch it, not because I’m in it, but because I truly believe it will be an amazing story being told on cinema.
Diego, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Diego Torres Kuri, I’m a creative. I find art to be one of the purest and most gratifying ways of expression. I find it to be one of the best ways to inspire and influence people. My love for cinema started at a young age, I believe it came form my dad who used to always watch classic movies at home, and every Sunday he would take us to the movie theater after church. I was also the class clown, in my house and in school, so it was always a mix between wanting attention and wanting to make people laugh. At first I wanted to study cinematography but eventually decided to study acting and I fell in love with it. It was not putting on masks and being silly on camera, it turned out to be much deeper than that, it was actually taking off all the masks and learning about myself and my true essence. It was being vulnerable and transparent. It was about the truth more than faking something. And so it has made me grow as a human being, it has helped me understand myself and the world better. It has made me compassionate and bold. As of this moment, I feel more inclined to tell my own stories, to create my own content, and I’m in the journey of making that happen. Hopefully you’ll see something of my own creation soon, and hopefully it moves something in you and serves as a catalyst for change in you.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I’m a big time reader. One of the first books I read because I wanted to (and not because I had to in school) was Life is What You Make It by Peter Buffet, the title itself has become a motto in my life. Everyone goes through good times and bad times, and none of us chooses where we are born and/or the circumstances we’re surrounded by when we’re born. But for the majority of cases, we can choose what we do we our lives. It all revolves around the choices we make. We can take a bad thing that happens to us and turn it into a lesson and into fuel. We can make ourselves miserable and that’s the story we tell ourselves and the world, or we can become the heroes in our own study and turn things around.
There’s a quote by 50 Cent that I like and that I’ve put a little spin on. It says ‘’Sunny days wouldn’t be special if it wasn’t for rain. Joy wouldn’t feel so good if it wasn’t for pain. Death gotta be easy cause life…. Well, life is what you make it.”
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I believe my mission is to be a catalyst for change. I want to make people see themselves in a mirror and reflect on their lives and actions. When I first started my journey as an actor, I believed I wanted to make people laugh, or make myself famous. But now I see that art has a greater purpose than that. I want to make people think, I want them to question their way of living. I want to help people become better human beings, I want them to make positive changes in their lives. I want to inspire them. Basically I want to contribute in making this a better world than how I found it, even if it’s just helping 1 person.
