We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Diego Montemayor. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Diego below.
Diego, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
I am an entrepreneur at heart and very mission driven – that makes me very happy and grateful. As a business owner I experience many emotions daily but the most prominent and at the end of the day is that of happiness.
As a curious mind, I often think about what it would be to have a “regular job” – for whatever that means. In my opinion, there are no “regular jobs” as all jobs are dignifying and extraordinary, but the thought of doing something different at this point in my life is quite unsettling as I love what I do. I really enjoy being challenged daily and having a positive impact on people’s lives.
I love helping people get jobs to better their lives.
Diego, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a Latino entrepreneur from Mexico. I built Chamba because I saw the hospitality industry struggle to find good quality talent in the labor market, quickly.
Chamba connects the hospitality industry with flexible staffing through an app. Stadiums, venues, cultural attractions, hotels and resorts come to Chamba to find good talent, quickly. Fluctuating demands are very common in this industry and building a product that could tackle that was crucial. From taking care of paperwork and admin tasks to payment and insurance, Chamba takes care of the whole process for our clients. Our Partners simply submit a request for staff and we take care of the rest. We love simplicity.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Having limited resources pushed us to get really creative. If you visit our Instagram, at the beginning you can see all of the executive team doing pretty funny stuff. We had to get out there one way or the other.
Something that really helped us build an audience was being genuine. Knowing your audience and presenting yourself as you are will make the connection between them and you very very strong.
The biggest advice here is – don’t be shy. If something doesn’t go viral, try the next best idea you and your team put together. One will hit. Then, just repeat.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
We originally built a diverse job board. That didn’t work out.
But during that journey we got to understand what the actual problems were in the hospitality industry when it comes to staffing. We saw what was broken and realized the opportunity that we had to make an impact. From those learnings we made a pivot to the new model which is staffing on demand and now we are in the right path for growth.
