We recently connected with Didda Joe and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Didda thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
When I was about 9 years old, I had started writing my own songs, and since I had no access to producers or any studios at that age, I decided well I can play instruments so it can’t be too hard to produce a beat. So, after some time figuring out how to make a song on my own, I noticed how many people gravitated to the music I was making, people would be so amazed at what I was doing. After some time seeing that, that’s when I knew. I wanted to be famous and one of the best in the world at what I can do!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Well my name is Didda I am a singer songwriter producer and multi instrumentalist born and raised in Indianapolis Indiana. I started doing music when I was really young after watching my parents who were both musicians as well. So by the time I was 18 and had dropped outta college I decided to take a chance and take my talents to Los angeles. I feel like it was in California that I really started to hone my craft and that’s when I got into the music industry. While working in the music business trying to navigate and build my own career I manage to work with several different people such as master P, Columbus short, Shafiq Husayn, which even let me have the chance one day to work with two of my most favorite R&B artist, Ro James, and Miguel which became my first ever placement as a songwriter .
Working behind the scenes in the industry was OK, but I still felt like I had my own story to tell I had some thing about me that people needed to witness for themselves and not through the eyes of other artist. So now here I am taking the reins in my own hand and I’m trying to let the world finally experience Didda. One thing I hope that my fans will take away from listening to my music and experiencing me as the artist is how it feels to feel love again to believe in something bigger again then themselves, and how to feel safe again being there most authentic self no matter who likes it or hates it.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I kind of feel like when it comes to supporting artists people should just find ways to support them more personally. It’s great to have enough fans and supporters streaming your music constantly you know on all the different platforms that are available today, that’s amazing! However, I think many are starting to see that streaming platforms don’t pay the artist what they deserve, but there is still plenty of other ways to support artists whether buying their Murch, coming to their concerts and shows, or just simply donating you know a couple bucks to them so that they can do what they do without having to give up their lives their rights or sometimes just everything they have to just be able to create their art as a career.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
One thing about my journey is I’ve heard a lot of no’s. But throughout all the nose I’ve heard the main thing I also heard every time is how my music, my art, is my destiny and that I’m a superstar and that I was going to change the world. I think for me having the reassurance from the fans and friends and family and just even strangers who just randomly get a chance to hear my music has been everything I needed to keep me going. Sometimes I think you just need the right kind of energy surrounding you at the right time to keep you resilient when you can’t find in any other way to keep yourself going. I mean hey, just imagine even in your darkest time your darkest hour you’re ready to quit and that next day could be the day that your whole life changes in your dreams come true, I don’t think I could be the person to take the risk of that happening, could you?
