We were lucky to catch up with Dianne Schechter recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dianne, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One of the most important things we can do as business owners is ensure that our customers feel appreciated. What’s something you’ve done or seen a business owner do to help a customer feel valued?
I love my clients like they are my own family! I take their skin concerns and treatment plans very seriously and when a client picks me to help them on their journey to obtain flawless skin, I consider that an absolute honor. There is a certain trust that needs to be built over time, which is normal in this industry. Your clients need to trust that you will give them the proper advice and guidance to achieve their skin goals. Once a client becomes a regular, I make myself available 24-7 to them. I have met clients at 9pm at night or 6:30 in the morning, when they were filled with anxiety and wanted me to examine something on their skin. I know that feeling all too well and I don’t mind meeting them during my off hours to see what I can do to help. One specific example involves one of my longtime clients and her daughter. The weather had been extremely dry for a few weeks and her daughter’s lips were severely chapped from licking them. The chapped lips, combined with licking her lips, and the weather created a rash around her mouth. I met them at my salon after I was closed for the day and gave them some samples to treat the rash and dryness. Two days later the rash was completely gone!!! My client was so grateful and I know our client/friend/esthetician bond is now unshakable. It didn’t matter that it was late at night because all I cared about was seeing what I could do to help her daughter. It is not about the sale for me. It is about developing trust with my clients so that they trust that I will get them to their goals and that I am genuinely here for them.
Dianne, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Having been born in Honolulu, Hawaii and raised in San Diego, California, I was taught at a young age how important it is to take care of your skin.
I had regularly seen dermatologists and estheticians since the sixth grade when I began to develop severe cystic acne. I am no stranger to skin issues and skincare products and I had tried virtually everything under the sun to get my acne under control.
Prior to becoming an esthetician, nothing I tried for my acne worked and eventually I succumbed to taking Accutane. This experience allowed me to really dive into the world of skincare and I have been enthusiastically exploring it ever since!
I earned my Bachelor’s degree and Paralegal Certificate at the University of San Diego. A few years later, I went back to school and earned my Master’s Degree in History at the University of San Diego.
After working as a paralegal for 9 years, I felt like something was missing in my professional life.
In 2019 I realized I had been giving skincare advice, tips, and product recommendations to my friends and family for years and I really enjoyed it. I decided it was time to turn my favorite hobby into a career. I obtained my esthetician license and opened up my own business so that I could help as many people as possible achieve the beautiful skin that they deserve.
I use and sell Hale and Hush and Circadia skincare products at my salon. I have tried every skincare line out there and after months of burning my neck and face, I finally found the two most amazing lines! Everything I use during my facials, or retail for home use, I have personally tried myself. I also always make sure I have samples of all my products on hand because I am a firm believer in trying skincare products out before buying them.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Since I have opened my business, my current clients have been my best referrals for new clients. People ask about their skin and tell them how good it looks and that they want those results as well. Luckily my clients are loyal and love their results as well and then they pass along my contact information.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I learned the lesson that you don’t have to be a doctor or a lawyer to be considered successful in life. I went to college and graduate school, yet the best job I have ever had is being an esthetician of my own business. I feel like I was born to do this; yet it was never considered a real career option for me in my family growing up. I had to learn that it doesn’t matter what your occupation is and you can be successful no matter what as long as you love what you are doing and are willing to put in the hard work.
