Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Diane Yang. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Diane, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. The first dollar you earn in a new endeavor is always special. We’d love to hear about how you got your first client that wasn’t a friend or family.
I remember jumping up and down in my tiny duplex when I booked my first client for $5. It felt so surreal that a stranger would inquire about my packages and how much I charged. I started OnlyDiane Photos from the ground up and was excited to have to start somewhere. I sometimes think back to that moment, and the innocence of pure happiness still makes me laugh because I have grown so much since.
Diane, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I created OnlyDiane Photography with a passion for providing a safe space for individuals struggling to be their best version because I know how it feels.
Fun fact: I started wanting to be in front of the camera, but I had a lot of social anxiety, preventing me from reaching out or collaborating with other photographers. So, I decided to learn how to take photos, which started my self-portrait.
During my self-portraits, I realized I had more to offer being behind the camera. That was where OnlyDiane Photography started. I wanted to create a safe space for individuals to be comfortable showing up as whatever version of themselves they want. My tagline is “Just me, be you.” With that, I love working with individuals who are nervous about being in front of the camera.
One of the most fulfilling feelings as a photographer is seeing the shift in my client’s mood and confidence from the start to the end of their session. It usually starts with them being nervous and figuring out how to pose to the end, where they are so in their element and serving strikes.
Over the years, I have had clients who have gone on to explore the space in front of the camera or even started photography themselves. I genuinely love to see it all!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me as a photographer it is really rewarding to see my clients use my the photos that I took of them as their profiles for their social media profile picture. It is a true honor to see that the photo they choose to represent them is of one that I took. Truly a rewarding feeling and I love to see it!
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I have found that the most effective strategy for growing my clientele is to just stay true to myself and the kinds of photos I want to capture. Find your niche and get good at it. Love what you do and you clientele will grow to follow.
